Lorelei and the Laser Eyes Overview
Lorelei and the Laser Eyes (or shortened as Lorelei) is a mysterious adventure puzzle game by Simogo, the studio beyond Sayonara Wild Hearts. It was released on May 16, 2024 and garnered very favorable reception due to its unique visual aesthetic and difficult-but-fair puzzles. It was nominated for The Game Awards 2024 under the ‘Best Independent Game’ category.
The game stars an unnamed woman who was invited to come to a hotel manor within Central Europe to participate in an art exhibition. The project, helmed by a mysterious "Renzo," is soon found out to be a hotel-wide experiment filled with puzzles and mysteries that the woman must solve. She ventures into the mansion full of winding interconnected hallways, trapdoors, elevators, and secret passageways, finding any bit of important information and clues she can gather to progress and uncover ‘The Truth.’

Lorelei and the Laser Eyes Gameplay
Lorelei and the Laser Eyes is a non-linear adventure puzzle game with over 100 handcrafted puzzles designed to challenge players. Players control a mysterious woman as she enters a gigantic maze-like manor filled with eccentric architecture, winding hallways, and challenging puzzles. Almost each puzzle is unique in their mechanics, but almost always requires some sort of code to solve, be it a numerical one, or symbols. However, the challenge lies in acquiring the codes, where the players’ logic, reasoning, common sense, general knowledge, and observational skills will all be tested in order to arrive at the correct answers.
Throughout the woman’s adventure through the manor, she will find books, encyclopedias, and notes full of information for which the player can gather clues and general information. This allows the game to be wholly self contained and achievable without the use of guide nor hints. Each challenge is difficult, but designed to be solvable eventually by just progressing through the game. There are also multiple routes to explore at a given time, allowing the player to pursue different leads across the hotel, preventing gamers from getting stuck with their game progression on a single unsolvable puzzle.

Lorelei and the Laser Eyes received highly positive reception for its unique aesthetics and brilliant puzzles from critics and from the gaming community alike. We at Game8 highlighted its challenging puzzles that are only as difficult "in correlation to the knowledge you have or will gain," and how each obstacle is fair in how they lay the information out for players to decipher, challenging them to collect more clues, or look closer to the hand they’re dealt with in order to reach the correct answers.
IGN gave it an ‘Amazing at 9/10, praises it clever puzzles and eerie vibes that managers to evoke desire for players to keep progressing to uncover its complex mysteries. GameSpot gave it a ‘Superb’ at 9/10, commeding the necessary use of the protagonist’s inventory of notes and glossaries, allowing players to be immersed with combing through information and clues to solve consistently challenging puzzles. TheGuardian has bestowed it a 5/5 stars, where they express their admiration for the mindbending visual aesthetics and non-linear narrative told through its puzzles
Critics and users alike agree to give it a ‘Generally Favorable’ rating on the aggregation site MetaCritic, where games journalists give a collective 88/100 and users a 7.9/10. Meanwhile, players on Steam give it an ‘Overwhelmingly Positive’ rating overall, but merely a ‘Very Positive’ rating with recent reviews.
