SWORN is an upcoming action roguelike that can have up to four players playing in the same lobby! Read on to learn everything we know, our review of the demo, and more.

Everything We Know About SWORN

SWORN Plot

Image

Reclaim the fallen Camelot from the reign of a corrupt Arthur and his fellow Knights of the Round Table!

Meet several characters from the Arthurian legend and unleash the power of the Fae Lords in your quest to save Camelot.

SWORN Gameplay

Image

The gameplay is very similar to Hades, emphasizing quick movement and fluid attacks. The combat elements are then enhanced by taking blessings from the different Fae Lords, which directly improve your damage output or add new effects to your attacks. Upgrade and unlock new characters and weapons by using the resources you earn from completing rooms and runs.

With online support, the game allows up to four players to play in one run, making it a full-fledged co-op action roguelike experience.

SWORN Release Date

Image

SWORN will be released in 2024 for PC (Steam), and is available for wishlist only. For Steam Next Fest, the game will have a playable demo that’s available from June 10-17 only.

SWORN Review (Demo)

Imagine Hades But With Co-op!

Image

This game is interesting, especially since I’m an avid fan of several action roguelikes like Ravenswatch, Dead Cells, Risk of Rain, and especially Hades. So to put it briefly, the game is VERY similar to Hades in combat, progression, and even the blessings. The main things that make it unique are the setting of Camelot, the use of Arthurian characters, the art style inspired by popular comic book artist and writer Mike Mignola, and the game being able to support online co-op.

Dark and Stylistic Visuals and Setting

Image

The visuals are inspired by Mike Mignola’s art style, especially as he’s known to be the creator of the Hellboy universe and is widely known for his distinct use of shadows, contrasts, and, most of all, dark tones. The game actually looks great! It can even be said that it also resembles another roguelike game in Darkest Dungeon. My only complaint is that there are some animations that are stiff, which could still be fixed before the game releases.

Intense and Hype-Inducing Music

Image

The music in this game is pretty great as well. It’s also good to note that there are a couple of different tracks playing even for the first map, which is great to hear since you might get tired of the same old first zone track after a few hours of runs.

Fast-Paced and Responsive Combat

Similar to Hades, the game uses an isometric action roguelike style. Even the controls and abilities that you have are similar to the aforementioned title. It has quick movement and animations that feel responsive, which definitely feels great when you get to try it in real time.

The best part about the game is that it supports online co-op. The action roguelike genre is by no means unpopular, as we have been getting a lot of these type of games recently. However, there is a lack of co-op action roguelike games, and this game could definitely be one of the titles that could take advantage of that free market.

Tons of Variety for Weapons and Characters

While this is also similar to Hades, I was blown away by the amount of variety that the game currently has in its demo. There are a total of four playable characters, and each of them has four unique weapons and spells that you can change in the game’s hub area. This means that while you can play the same character, you can also use a different weapon if you fancy that weapon’s moveset more.

This, in addition to the game’s online co-op function, is what makes this game interesting. Not only that, but the permanent stat upgrades also carry over from character to character, which means that you don’t have to worry about grinding each character to get upgrades.

All in all, SWORN is an underrated action roguelike that has the potential to take advantage of the lack of co-op action roguelikes on the market. I, for one, am excited to see where this game goes and when it releases.
