Splitgate 2
Release Date Gameplay & Story Pre-Order & DLC Review

Splitgate 2 is a team-based FPS and 1047 Games’ follow-up to the 2019 original. Read on to learn how it plays, what it's about, and everything else we know so far.

Splitgate 2 Gameplay

Splitgate 2 is a free-to-play first-person shooter that builds upon the portal-based mechanics of its predecessor. It introduces expanded gameplay systems, new modes, and an enhanced multiplayer experience. The game retains its core mechanic of allowing players to create two linked portals on specific surfaces. This time, though, the portal system has been streamlined with an "auto triple portal" mechanic, which simplifies opening and closing portals.

A a 4v4 arena-based shooter, Splitgate 2 has players make use of a combination of conventional weapons and portal guns to outmaneuver opponents. Aside from sprinting and jetpack-assisted jumps, as in the first game, players can now slide and mantle in Splitgate 2.

A new addition to Splitgate 2 is the introduction of factions. There are currently three factions in the game, each with their own abilities and playstyles:

⚫︎ Aeros - Focused on mobility, Aeros players benefit from increased speed and quick reload times. Their "Rush" ability gives them a temporary speed boost.

⚫︎ Meridian - Focused on support, Meridian players possess abilities like "Hypersight," which reveals enemy positions, and "Time Dome," a deployable field that enhances allies’ reload speeds and movement while slowing enemies within its radius.

⚫︎ Sabrask - Focused on defense, Sabrask players can deploy the "Smart Wall," a barrier that blocks incoming fire while allowing allies to shoot through it.

Moreover, Splitgate 2 introduces several new game modes alongside returning favorites. These are:

⚫︎ Multi-Team Portal Warfare - An 8v8v8 mode featuring three teams competing on expansive maps like "Glacier," which is significantly larger than previous arenas. Sub-modes include Multi-Team Hotzone, Domination, and Deathmatch.

⚫︎ Splitball - A reimagined mode that combines elements of Capture the Flag and Oddball, where teams vie to control and return "Splitballs" to their base while preventing opponents from doing the same.

⚫︎ Firecracker - Inspired by games like Call of Duty’s Search and Destroy, this round-based mode involves teams alternating between planting and defusing a device called the "Firecracker," with a twist in the final tiebreaker round where both teams are on offense and defense simultaneously.

Splitgate 2 Story Plot

Unfortunately, the developers confirmed that Splitgate 2 does not have a single-player campaign. Nevertheless, the game’s lore appears to be expansive, with the game being set in a futuristic universe where players assume the role of elite combatants known as Aces, participating in the Sol Splitgate League—a prominent galactic arena competition. Here, three factions based on three planets vie for victory: Aeros from Earth, Meridian from Venus, and Sabrask from Mars.

While the developers did not want to reveal much about the lore of Splitgate 2, Ian Proulx did mention in an interview with GameRant that "in a lot of video games, characters die and respawn without any explanation. This concept is going to be explored in a future cinematic, but I can’t provide any details at the moment."

More lore about the game is available through digital comic books, accessible within the Splitgate 2 Companion app on mobile devices.
