Dragon Quest Producer Masaaki Hayasaka Leads Presentation for Remake

Image

DRAGON QUEST III HD-2D Remake marks the chronological beginning of the Erdrick Trilogy Remakes that will continue with a 2025 release for DRAGON QUEST I & II HD-2D Remake.

In this year’s Tokyo Game Show Square Enix Asia Special Program, producer Masaaki Hayasaka lead the presentation to promote the remake’s enhanced visuals, game mechanics and newest additions.

Dragon Quest III 2D-HD Remake Extended Gameplay Showcase

Image

Fans of the Dragon Quest series were given an extended preview of Dragon Quest III 2D-HD Remake during a presentation led by Neki Matsuzawa and producer Masaaki Hayasaka. The showcase included the opening minutes of a new save file, glimpses of the game's lore, and an introduction to the new Monster Battle Road mechanic. The event kicked off with a brief history of the Dragon Quest series, dating back to its 1986 debut, followed by a brand-new trailer highlighting the remake's stunning 2D-HD graphics.

Going Through DQ3 2D-HD Remake’s First Few Minutes

Image

The Dragon Quest III 2D-HD Remake extended gameplay showcase kicked off with the character creation screen, allowing the hosts to name and assign a personality to their protagonist through personality quiz-style questions. This nostalgic mechanic, also featured in the original game, determines which stats receive higher boosts during level-ups.

Next, the hosts unveiled the game’s fully voice-acted intro and dialogue, showcasing its stunning 2D-HD graphics and the newly expanded, now 3D, town of Aliahan. This was followed by a detailed look at party recruitment and creation, which highlighted new customization options for party members.

Throughout the half-hour presentation, several new features were revealed, including the "Auto-equip" function, a revamped overworld map filled with collectible items, and the Tactics panel, allowing players to set automated battle strategies.

Combat offers both manual and automatic modes, with three speed options for battles. As party members level up through the classic EXP system, some encounters yield "Lost Monsters," which are key to the new Monster Battle Road mechanic, which was expanded upon in the segment that followed.

Conquering Circuits on the “Monster Battle Road”

Image

The Dragon Quest III 2D-HD Remake introduces the Monster Battle Road, a turn-based auto-battle system reminiscent of Dragon Quest Monsters’ monster battles. In this mode, players capture "Lost Monsters" during regular combat and form specialized teams to compete in high-stakes ranked monster battles.

While players can set battle strategies, the monsters fight autonomously, using their own moves as directed by the player’s chosen strategy. Each team of three monsters competes in arena-style circuits, with increasing difficulty as players climb the ranks.

As teams improve and earn stronger rewards, such as prize money and equipment, the battles become more challenging, offering a rewarding progression system for dedicated monster collectors.

To wrap up the Dragon Quest III 2D-HD Remake presentation, details on platforms, languages, editions, and pre-order bonuses were finally revealed.

Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven Gameplay Showcase

Demo Trailer

Image
To promote the release of Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven, a new trailer for the demo version was showcased, featuring various characters such as Gerard, the Second Prince, and several recruitable classes like the Imperial Blacksmith and Dancer. The trailer also highlighted the Seven Heroes, offering a glimpse of the epic adventure ahead.

Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven Gameplay Deep Dive

Image

An extended gameplay showcase of Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven highlighted several key features. The first was the seamless transition between the overworld and turn-based battles. The turn-based combat uses a timeline system where icons representing allies and enemies are displayed, and units act when their turn arrives. The game allows you to choose your difficulty: Casual, Normal, and Extra Hard Mode.

Glimmers Return!

Image
The iconic Glimmer feature, a staple of the SaGa series, was also demonstrated. This mechanic allows characters to learn new techniques with certain weapons, indicated by a light bulb icon when a new technique is unlocked. Once learned, these Glimmered techniques can be used immediately and at any time. While learning Glimmers is luck-based, fighting tougher enemies increases the chance of discovering new techniques.

Plan your Formations and United Attacks

Image
Another feature shown was United Attacks, where hitting enemies with weapons, techniques, or spells they're vulnerable to fills the Overdrive gauge, allowing for powerful combination attacks. Additionally, the trailer showcased the Formations system, which lets players organize their party in different ways to unlock various tactical advantages.

Inheritance System

Image
The Inheritance system, a beloved feature of the series, allows a new emperor to inherit the abilities of the previous one. This system is triggered when the current emperor's LP reaches zero, they die, time skips occur, or the throne is abdicated. While the current emperor may fall, not everything is lost—stats, techniques, spells, and equipment can be passed down to the next ruler, ensuring continuity in the empire's strength and progress.

Each Player Will Have Unique Playthroughs

Image
Each player's playthrough will be unique because the order in which you face the Seven Heroes is entirely up to you. Additionally, key decisions throughout the game will drastically impact and change each playthrough, offering a fresh experience every time.
