Tides of Annihilation Arthurian Knights Concept is Tencent's Appeal to Westerners

Image
In an interview with Wccftech, Tides of Annihilation devs Eclipse Glow Games shared the reason why the game features Arthurian myths and is set in London. Read on to find out more about its concept and what’s to come.

Tides of Annihilation Aims For A Western Audience

The Central Concept Of Arthurian Myths And Knights

Last Gamescom 2024, the Tides of Annihilation developers at Eclipse Glow Games sat with Wccftech for a short interview about the game’s concept, gameplay mechanics, and the potential of an anthology.

Despite being a China-based developer studio, Eclipse Glow Games shared that they went with a Western setting for Tides of Annihilation because of the expectations set on them by Chinese conglomerate Tencent, who provided them financial backing for the game. "This game and Black Myth: Wukong are two projects invested in by Tencent, and there were different expectations set on these two projects. Black Myth: Wukong targeted the Chinese market, but for this project, we targeted a Western audience, so we chose the Arthurian legends." The game’s producer thought of a central concept surrounding the idea of knights, which later on became King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table.

Tides of Annihilation is set in a post-apocalyptic modern-day London, a city ravaged by an Outworld invasion that seemingly leaves the heroine, Gwendolyn, as its sole human survivor. While it presents itself in an alternate modern-day setting, it will have several fantasy elements as well, some of which are inspired directly by the Arthurian myths.

Devil May Cry-inspired Combat And Over 30 Bosses

From the gameplay reveal itself, action-RPG fans can quickly spot that Tides of Annihilation’s combat is similar to that of the classic Devil May Cry’s combat gameplay. The developers have acknowledged this, saying that it’s "definitely more like Devil May Cry" but with the handy-feature of difficulty selection. They have implemented fairly simple controls for players who would want to play action games but are not as hardcore as others, making the game more accessible to a wider audience.

Combat style will also be customizable through different playstyles, with four weapons to choose from and over ten different Knights to employ as your sidekicks. In the game, Gwendolyn finds out that she is able to command the legendary Knight of the Round Table on whim, having them fight by her side as they traverse through a ruined London to get to the bottom of the invasion. With over 30 bosses with unique abilities to conquer, players will surely have fun with its gameplay. "Players will have to prepare for very challenging boss fights," they added.

Plans Of Creating An Anthology

Eclipse Glow Games also shared in the same interview that they are looking into potentially expanding the franchise to include other settings and mythologies, hopefully with a different protagonist for each game. "But we would still want to use the Outworld invasion concept that we're using for Tides of Annihilation," they added, presumably to make it the core of the future anthology—if there is one. The team is hoping that the first title will be as successful as they project it to be, in order to bring forth even more mythologies and titles to life.

Action-adventure title Tides of Annihilation is currently at its beta phase, and the developers are aiming for a tentative launch window of 2026 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Players will follow protagonist Gwendolyn as she wrestles with fate and saves not just London, but the fantasy realm of Avalon that seems to be mingling with the real world.
