First Free-To-Play Silent Hill Title

Silent Hill: The Short Message was just surprise revealed at the PlayStation State of Play Event. What’s even more surprising is that it’s free-to-play and is releasing today.

The trailer shows glimpses into the eerie and fog-filled land of Silent Hill. In true Silent Hill fashion, the game seems to be about the main character’s psychological trauma. She’s seen unarmed and running from terrifying monsters, but with a phone that’s constantly being shown in the trailer, which we speculate will be an important tool essential to her survival. Additionally, there’s a content warning right at the start of the trailer, so we know there’s some depictions of attempted suicide.

A Message For The Struggling Youth

In today’s digital age, social media has become a core part of almost every young person’s life. However, while it is undoubtedly very helpful, the internet has also unfortunately become an avenue for hate and bullying. Silent Hill: The Short Message looks to incorporate how today’s youth communicates online with the psychological horror the franchise is known for. Hateful remarks towards a person online undoubtedly harm the target, even more so if these have piled up already. Just one more hateful comment could be enough to tip a troubled person over the edge and convince them to end it all. Inversely, even just one small act of kindness towards a struggling person could be just the thing that they need.

This is the message that the short game wants to share, and is why the developers chose to center the game’s story on young people struggling to navigate today’s digital age. Your actions online matter, regardless of whether they’re good or bad.
