MultiVersus' full launch has been met with mixed reactions from its player base, and while WB's platform fighter garnered over 100k CCU on Steam within the first 24 hours, new character restrictions have caused frustration among players.

MultiVersus Relaunch Met With Mixed Reactions Over Character Restrictions

Fans Think This Will Kill MultiVerseus

Following its open beta conclusion last year, MultiVersus fully re-released on May 28 across PC, Xbox, and PlayStation. On Steam, the game recorded a peak of 114,515 concurrent players. However, despite the achievement, the community's response was marred by discontent over newly implemented character restrictions.

In contrast to the open beta, where players had access to the full roster for local play and training mode, MultiVersus now restricts character access to those 'officially unlocked' by the player. This change did not go over well, with many players expressing their disappointment and frustration on various SNS platforms. According to the MultiVersus website, all characters can eventually be earned through gameplay, but it seems enclaves preferred the more open access provided during the beta.

One player voiced out their frustration on Reddit, saying, "It used to be the case that you could play any character for local play, and I've been having a blast playing with my siblings all year, but now that the game is out, the characters you can select are only the ones you've officially unlocked." The players surmised that the change could be due to monetization efforts, though still lamenting, "I'm really disappointed by this new edition and my hype has been officially killed."

"This is going to actually lose them money in the long run because now people won't invite their friends over to play local matches. Fighting game tournaments will be far less likely to host this game. It's only day one and they're already bottlenecking the amount of people that will see the game," another commented on the situation.

Currently, new MultiVersus characters can be unlocked by purchasing them with Gleamium, the in-game premium currency, or Fighter Currency. Both can be earned through events and gameplay, though Gleamium is also available for purchase with real money. Additionally, some characters can be unlocked by completing challenges, while a few are accessible without any purchase.

Some players feel particularly aggrieved by the restrictions in training mode. This mode previously allowed players to try out characters before committing to unlocking them, which many saw as a valuable feature. As one disappointed fan remarked, "Ironic that the studio named Player First Games doesn't put the player first 🙂."
