Acclaimed game director Hideo Kojima, best known for the Metal Gear and Death Stranding franchises, shared his thoughts on the latest Hollywood blockbuster Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, giving high praises to one actor in particular.

Hideo Kojima Sees Furiosa Actor Tom Burke as Metal Gear’s Solid Snake

Metal Gear Solid Movie Cast Still Unannounced

In a recent post on Twitter (X), Metal Gear creator Kojima shared his thoughts, as a cinephile himself, on Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, the latest movie in the post-apocalyptic dystopian franchise Mad Max. While he noted that the film featured standout performances from leading A-list actors Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth, Kojima was particularly captivated by lesser-known actors Charlee Fraser and Tom Burke.

Kojima was drawn to Burke's work, whom he thought could play as one of Kojima's own iconic characters, Solid Snake from the Metal Gear series. "These two new characters are too cool! The actors who played them are sure to be a breakout hit. Furiosa's mother, Mary, is played by Charlee Fraser, who was also in 'Anyone But You'. Tom Burke plays Jack, Furiosa's mentor," read Kojima's tweet. "I could only see him as Snake. When I met Tom at a party, I asked him about it and he told me that he was told that he looked like 'Snake' by the crew on the first day of shooting."

Burke’s performance and resemblance to Solid Snake led Kojima to propel the actor straight to the top of the actors-to-consider list if a recasting of the highly intriguing Metal Gear Solid movie were to happen. Kojima's comments came amid ongoing speculation about the movie adaptation of his stealth action game series, Metal Gear Solid, which has been in development for several years.

Following casting transitions for the Metal Gear Solid movie over the years, the latest reports on the movie suggested that it features Hollywood A-lister Oscar Isaac as Solid Snake. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly in 2021, the movie’s director, Jordan Vogt-Roberts, discussed his vision for the film possessing a unique blend of action and stealth that stays true to the game's atmosphere. "You're dealing with these characters that are walking, talking ideologies," Vogt-Roberts said. "They all represent different slivers and ideas of this basic question: How do we make the world whole again?"

The Metal Gear series began with the 1987 game where players control Solid Snake, a military operative tasked with stopping a terrorist attack at a nuclear facility. The franchise has since evolved into a complex narrative exploring themes of war, espionage, and identity.

Vogt-Roberts was committed to adapting Metal Gear Solid for the big screen, while acknowledging the challenge of translating video games' interactive elements into a compelling film narrative. "Those aren't one-to-one translations," he explained. "So, I think you really need to understand when playing a game what it elicits from you, why it makes you feel certain ways, what the tone that it evokes is."
