Concept Art from The Super Mario Bros. Movie Revealed
Princess Daisy In Early Drafts of the Movie
Brian from news outlet NintendoEverything discovered that Jed Diffenderfer, a story artist who worked on The Super Mario Bros. movie, uploaded a series of concept art to his website. As seen in the images above, some of the concept art shares many similarities with the movie itself. From the brothers’ plumbing van to Mario’s first encounter with a warp pipe and Bowser’s defeat and kidnapping of King Penguin, fans can see the differences and similarities from the early concepts to the finalized big screen renditions.
Among them were two slice-of-life stills of the brothers grooming themselves in front of the mirror, combing their mustaches together, depicting their bond even while performing mundane everyday tasks. The other shows Toad alone, patiently sitting and waiting on a bus stop built out of floating blocks over a body of water.
Lastly, and most surprisingly of all, Diffenderfer posts two very concept art containing fan favorite Princess Daisy!
In one of the pieces, she is seen together with a young Princess Peach under a "Mushroom High Prom" sign laughing at a dejected young Bowser crying and walking away. This is surprising news for fans, as they get to see both how Princess Daisy might’ve had a role in the movie, and also a potential backstory of Bowser’s history with Princess Peach and his obsessioninfatuation with her.
The final concept art reveals a massive battle being waged between the citizens of the Mushroom Kingdom and Bowser’s army. Keen-eyed fans can look through the battlefield and spot many characters that were absent from the movie, most notably the aforementioned Princess Daisy, Toadsworth and Toadette, and Birdo among Bowser’s forces.
As stated by Tom Phillips from the news outlet Eurogamer, Diffenderfer lists his work history as a story artist on the Mario movie from 2018 to 2020. Seeing as the movie itself debuted on the big screen much later in 2023, it would be safe to assume that all of the concept art he has uploaded was produced very early in the movie’s development, way before much of the story has been set in stone.
These revelations could, however, offer an insight into the potential events in the next Mario movie being filmed, as announced back in MAR10 day a few days ago.
