Ghost of Yotei Combat Lets You Fight Even Dirtier
Honor Has No Place Here
In contrast to the previous game’s protagonist, Jin Sakai, Atsu is neither a samurai nor a ninja but a mercenary who’ll use any weapon to win a fight. It’s been revealed that she has more than just her katana. Atsu gains access to five dueling weapons in her quest for revenge: the katana, spear, kusarigama, odachi, and dual katanas. It was also emphasized that each weapon will have its own unique set of upgrades.
Furthermore, certain weapons will be effective against certain types of enemies or weapons, similar to how stances worked in the previous game. Fighting against a bigger opponent? The odachi’s large blade is effective in cutting them down. What about a spear-wielding opponent? The dual katanas can be used to maneuver around their attacks and make quick work of them.
While its effective use hasn’t been revealed as of yet, the kusarigama allows her to do a long-range stealth takedown, which greatly expands the stealth combat of the series.
In addition to her huge arsenal of dueling weapons, she is also able to use both a gun and a bow to shoot down enemies from afar. Similar to the previous game, she is also able to use a variety of tools like kunai, bombs, and even blinding powders to gain an edge against her opponents.
If It Ain't Broke...
Combat seemingly remains largely similar to the previous installment. Blocking, parrying, and dodging are still the main ways to defend against enemy attacks. Even the color-coded glints are still included, where blue denotes that the attack must be parried and red must be dodged. However, a new yellow glint was added, which allows enemies to disarm Atsu’s currently equipped weapon. To counter this, Atsu must strike the opponent with the correct timing to disarm them before they do. Lastly, standoffs are also revealed to be included in the game but it's still a mystery whether the mechanics or the way to trigger one are the same as the previous game.
