FF7 Rebirth Director Shared Insights About the Game

Resisted Adding New Content to the PC Version

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth director, Naoki Hamaguchi, and the development team wanted to add a new DLC to the PC version but ultimately decided against it to quickly work on the final installment of the game during an interview posted at Epic Games blog post on December 13.

The PC version of FF7 Rebirth could have new content had the development team given in to their desire. "We did have the desire to add an episodic story as a new DLC to the PC version," Hamaguchi shared. However, given the limited amount of resources, he stated that working on and finishing the final game is the team’s "highest priority" right now.

Though the development team has no plans to add new content yet, Hamaguchi is open to player requests. "If we receive strong requests from players after the release regarding certain matters, we would like to consider them." That being said, new content might come to the PC version if a substantial number of players urge the developers.

A Message to the Modding Community

In the same interview, Hamaguchi made a request to the modding community. Although the game does not have official mod support, its release on PC will inevitably attract the attention of modders, who can add or modify various assets in the game.

When asked if the PC version will be as mod-friendly as the 2012 remaster, Hamaguchi said, " We respect the creativity of the modding community and welcome their creations—though we ask modders not to create or install anything offensive or inappropriate."

Mods are generally helpful in making games more exciting and beautiful by adding new features, content, upgraded texture resolutions, and others. Some even become stand-alone games like Counter-Strike, which started as a mod for the original Half-Life game.

However, considering how the internet works, some game mods can be vulgar and provocative, making Hamaguchi’s request to the modding community quite reasonable.

FF7 PC Version Changes and Improvements

The PC version of FF7 Rebirth comes with new graphical updates and features to elevate players’ gaming experience, including lighting and texture resolutions. This game will be released on January 23, 2025, on Steam and Epic Games Store.

In the PC version, they adjusted the lighting rendering, which was one of the major complaints in the original version because it "sometimes creates an uncanny valley effect with character faces." On more powerful rigs, they also prepared better 3D models and texture resolutions that PS5 cannot handle.

Meanwhile, Hamaguchi also identified the mini-games as a challenging aspect of making the PC port. It was a challenge to tackle the huge number of required tasks, such as enabling unique key configuration settings for certain mini-games, he shared.

FF7 Rebirth is the second installment of the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy. This game was originally released for PS5 on February 9, 2024, receiving critical acclaim from critics and players alike.
