Fate/Grand Order New Story Arc Surprise Update
“The Beginning of Aftertime” Now Available

Fate/Grand Order (FGO) surprised fans with a new update following the epic conclusion of its main story late last year. In a post on FGO’s Official Japanese website on January 7, 2026, the developers unveiled a new story arc titled "The Beginning of Aftertime."
There were rumblings in the community that the game could end its services as it had already reached its finale with Cosmos in the Lostbelt Part 2 in the JP version of the game. Additionally, FGO has been online for over 10 years since July 2015, further fueling speculations that it will shut down shortly after the final chapter.

However, with the latest update for JP introducing a new story arc, the game seems poised to move beyond its original conclusion and explore fresh experiences. This latest narrative appears to have transported certain characters back in time, specifically between 2019 and 2020.
They have concluded that this phenomenon is caused by a Beast threat, but it is still unclear where it is. Mash Kyrielight, Fujimaru Ritsuka, and others now must find the Beast and ascertain the situation.
According to the developers, the new story arc is supposed to be a "low-stakes post-game" experience, and the Final Chapter was indeed the definitive conclusion of FGO.
Not-So-Surprised Fans

While there were speculations that FGO could end after its finale, many weren’t that surprised that the game would have a new story arc. Several threads from Reddit and other blog forums online somewhat expected the developers to still support the game as it continues to top the mobile revenue charts in Japan.
It is also important to note that Aniplex did not announce anything about FGO’s end-of-service, which is why most did not take those speculations seriously. Furthermore, it is quite common for gacha games to continue beyond the conclusion of their main story arc.

Titles that have done this transition are Honkai Impact 3rd, Granblue Fantasy, Epic Seven, Blue Archive, and many more. Most of the time, these transitions are often branded as "Part 2" or just an entirely new story arc that explores more of the game world, expanding other narratives that would keep the title going for years.
With "The Beginning of Aftertime" introducing a new threat to the game, fans can expect FGO to continue rolling out new updates and even possibly set up for more story arcs in the future.
