On March 1, the world lost a legendary figure in the realm of manga, anime, and games as Akira Toriyama, the creator of Dragon Ball, passed away at the age of 68. Read on to learn more about his passing and Toriyama's legacy.
Dragon Ball Creator Akira Toriyama Passes Away
The news was confirmed by Toriyama's Bird Studio, citing the cause of death as an acute subdural hematoma in a statement released today. He passed away on March 1 at the age of 68. The studio expressed regret that Toriyama had several ongoing projects that he approached with great enthusiasm.
For those unfamiliar, acute subdural hematoma refers to a sudden accumulation of blood in the area between the brain and its protective outer layer. This condition often arises following a severe head injury, posing a significant risk due to the pressure the blood exerts on the brain. Symptoms may include headaches, confusion, or even loss of consciousness. This can result in permanent brain damage or, as in this case, death.
Despite his untimely departure, Toriyama left behind a rich legacy of manga titles and contributions to art that have captivated the world for over four decades. Toriyama's influence extended far beyond manga. He was actively involved in various adaptations of his works, including the cultural phenomenon, Dragon Ball series.
Beyond pages and animation, he was involved in character designs for numerous games including Dragon Ball's RPG and fighting games, the Dragon Quest series, and the critically acclaimed RPG, Chrono Trigger—forming what Square Enix would dub as the "dream team" along with Hironobu Sakaguchi, creator of the Final Fantasy series and Yuji Horii, creator of the Dragon Quest series.
In 2019, Toriyama received the prestigious Chevalier of the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres for his outstanding contributions to the arts. His enduring legacy will be further honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2024 Tokyo Anime Awards Festival.
