Borderlands 4 promises a "very ambitious" endgame. Read on to learn more about what the developers have in store for the game’s post-story content and its new "Welcome to Kairos" trailer.

Borderlands 4 Extensive Content and New Trailer

Featuring A Very Ambitious Endgame

Borderlands 4 developer Gearbox Software has provided much information about the game’s mechanics and lore leading up to its launch, and now, they have promised a very ambitious endgame. In an interview with Game Informer on July 7, Creative Director Graeme Timmins gave some details about Borderlands 4’s post-story content.

Timmins was part of the team that crafted Borderlands 3’s endgame and stated that the team drew inspiration from past titles. He said that he knows what the community wants for it, and has already built it in the game.

"We've thought about [Borderlands 4's] endgame from the jump, and we have some great plans for it that we're going to share, but I think we're taking a lot of the lessons from both [Tiny Tina's] Wonderlands and Borderlands to make sure that we execute the best version of the endgame yet for Borderlands," Timmins explained.

Fans Create Skill Planner Despite Skills Still Subject To Change

Beyond its anticipated endgame, fans are very eager to play the game as they have already made a skill tree planner months before its release. As announced by Twitter (X) user Byrd on July 7, together with Maxroll.gg, they have made a Borderlands 4 skill planner for playable Vault Hunters Vex and Rafa.

However, Timmins responded on the post to remind fans that everything is still subject to change. He stated, "This is an awesome tool!! But remember... the game isn't done yet... and all skills are SUBJECT TO CHANGE :) We're still balancing and fine tuning all characters, so what you've played/seen in demos so far maybe different at launch. Just a reminder :)."

"Welcome to Kairos" Trailer Reveals More Info About The Game’s Setting

In the second entry of their BEYOND THE BORDERLANDS video series titled "Welcome to Kairos," Borderlands 4’s Narrative team introduced fans to the prison planet Kairos. The 7-minute video, uploaded on July 8, provided players with more information about the game’s setting, new factions, their leaders and commanders, and the creation of the main protagonist, the Time Keeper.

As the Time Keeper rules the planet as an oppressive dictator, the Vault Hunters try to rally different factions to break free from his control. These include The Outbounders, The Augurs, The Electi, The Ripper Queen, and Idolater Sol of the Fadefields. Each faction has its agenda, and it is up to the players to convince them to join the Crimson Resistance and overcome the tyrannical ruler.

In terms of crafting the game’s primary antagonist, Managing Director of Narrative Lin Joyce said that they went back to previous main villains of the series and considered how they can make The Time Keeper stand out. Narrative Director Sam Winkler noted that they wanted him to exude a sense of dread, controlling over people as he sees fit. He stated, "We wanted a villain who is a new type of character in the franchise, who is ever-present, and not overstaying his welcome."

Joyce continued to explain the game’s immense world, how they brought back things fans wanted to see again, and said it welcomes both longtime players and newcomers. "It is a turning point in our universe, and how it connects back to our previous titles, but also at the end where it will point, is worth playing for," she elaborated.

As Gearbox continues to innovate by ditching loading screens and improving its robust weapons system, Borderlands 4 looks to be the pinnacle title of the series. Borderlands 4 is set to be released on September 12, 2025 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.
