Borderlands 4 Overview

Borderlands 4 is the latest entry in Gearbox Software’s acclaimed looter-shooter series. Released in ** September 12, 2025** for the PC (Steam, Epic Games), PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2, the game takes place shortly after the conclusion of Borderlands 3 where Tyreen the Destroyer is defeated and Lilith sacrifices herself to save Pandora. The game takes place in a new ancient planet beyond Pandora named Kairos, where players control one of four Vault Hunters in a quest to acquire more alien loot and overthrow the tyrannical dictator the "Timekeeper".

Borderlands 4 aims to enhance the franchise's signature looter-shooter gameplay, where players collect upgrades for their specific Vault Hunter to defeat enemies and bosses across the world. Players will take on the role of a Vault Hunter, battling waves of enemies while searching for valuable loot and treasures. There are currently four playable Vault Hunters: Rafa the Exo-Soldier, Harlowe the Gravitar, Amon the Forgeknight, and Vex the Siren, with a 5th Vault Hunter named C4$H joining the roster in the "Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned" story pack.

Borderlands 4 Gameplay

Borderlands 4 builds on the series’ core looter-shooter formula with faster movement, deeper customization, and more dynamic combat. Players choose from four new Vault Hunters, each with unique abilities, tech, and playstyles—from summoning allies to forging elemental weapons on demand.

Digistruct weapons allow for real-time gear swapping mid-fight, while mounts add traversal and combat options across Kairos’s open, interconnected regions. Co-op remains central, with drop-in multiplayer and improved synergy between character builds. Whether solo or squad-based, the gameplay emphasizes fluid action, strategic ability use, and constant loot progression.

Borderlands 4 Characters

Amon

Image

Towering over the battlefield and anchoring the Borderlands 4 Vault Hunter crew with raw elemental power, Amon the Forgeknight stands out as both a juggernaut and a furnace of destruction. Armed with elemental axes designed for brutal throws and devastating melee attacks, he’s often more dangerous up close than at range—though he’s no stranger to firearms either.

Amon’s signature ability, "Crucible," forges a powerful elemental axe to hurl at enemies, with a secondary effect that grants him another axe infused with a different element. "Onslaughter" unleashes a fiery melee combo fueled by punches and hammer strikes, while "Scourge" takes a more defensive approach, using a flaming shield to absorb damage and return it in kind. Where past Vault Huntercrews had their Sirens wielding elemental power, the Forgeknight fully embraces it, channeling the raw elements into every strike.

Harlowe

Image

When it comes to raw crowd control, few compare to Harlowe the Gravitar and her signature "Entanglement" mechanic, which links enemies together so that damage dealt to one is shared across all affected targets. True to her Gravitar designation, she also manipulates space on the battlefield—her "Zero-Point" ability lifts enemies into the air and launches them into others for disruptive impact.

Harlowe also leans into her tech background with a variety of gadgets designed to spread Entanglement across the field. The "Chroma Accelerator" ability affects a wide area, while "Flux Generator" mines create localized traps for unsuspecting enemies. Whether she's locking enemies down or spreading damage across a sea of targets, Harlowe is well-equipped to manage the chaos.

Rafa

Image

Versatility meets high-impact firepower in Borderlands 4 with Rafa the Exo-Soldier, whose dynamic, run-and-gun style is built around on-demand Digistruct weapons. Whether tearing through enemies with a Samus-style arm cannon or finishing them off up close with brutal arm blades, Rafa is engineered for forward momentum.

His "Apophis Lance" provides a powerful, arm-mounted ranged option for engaging enemies at a distance. When overwhelmed, Rafa can deploy "Peacebreaker Cannon" turrets to apply pressure and thin the crowd. Those who survive the barrage face his "Arc-Knives" in close quarters, as he charges in with "Overdrive"—a mobility boost that scales with each Digistructed weapon.

Vex

Image

Every Borderlands Vault Hunter crew features a Siren, and Borderlands 4 is no exception. This time, it's Vex—the Dark Siren. Unlike the elemental-focused Sirens of past entries, Vex takes a different approach, leaning into summoning as her core playstyle. She calls forth "Reapers" for melee attacks and "Specters" for ranged support, turning the tide of battle with spectral reinforcements.

Her "Phased Phamiliar" ability summons a companion named Trouble, which deals area damage wherever it moves. Combined with her "Incarnation" ability—an AoE attack in its own right—Vex can quickly clear crowded engagements. And while she may not appear elementally attuned at first, her "Phase Covenant" ability allows her to share her gun's elemental type with all her summons, binding her arsenal together into a unified force of destruction.

C4SH

Image

If you like to gamble, C4SH is your character. A casino-bot turned Vault Hunter who chases the highs and lows gambling through finding cursed eldritch artifacts, C4SH specializes in high-risk, high-reward plays that, through well-timed and informed gambits, can stack the odds in the team's favor. Much like other Vault Hunters, C4SH will have three unique Action Skills to choose from that, while enhanceable through skill branches and trees, all involve an element of random chance to them. If the odds are in your favor, C4SH can deal massive amounts of damage, buff himself and the team greatly, and even unlock a lifesteal mechanic, but draw a bad hand and C4SH instantly becomes the weakest Hunter on the team.
