Borderlands 4 Building Up Towards Release
Photo-Mode Will Be Added in a Post-Launch Update
Borderlands 4 will feature a photo mode, but it will only be available after the game launches. In a Twitter (X) post on June 25, Creative Director Graeme Timmins revealed that it was initially planned to be included from the start, but took a backseat due to the team focusing on other, much more important aspects of the game.
In a follow-up comment, Timmins stated, "I had us prioritize polishing some other elements, more core to the moment-to-moment experience. We've always planned for it, and had it tasked up, we just needed to spend a bit more time on things that would directly impact QoL of playing the game."
Its predecessor, Borderlands 3, launched with photo mode in 2019, while the feature came to consoles at a later date. The developers have taken into account the community’s requests since the previous title and have tried their best to address them.
More recently, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford revealed that the team has added a highly requested feature at the last minute. Pitchford unveiled on Twitter (X) on June 20 that the combat radar will be available for players who want some assistance in their gameplay.
This assistive function helps players to have a better understanding of the area and will be able to detect enemies across the battlefield. However, this must be enabled in the settings, as by default, the combat radar will be turned off.
Pitchford wanted to reiterate the importance of community suggestions to the game and thanked "real fans who sincerely want the best for the game and gave constructive notes and made reasonable arguments."
New Official Story Trailer Revealed at Borderlands Fan Fest
During the Borderlands Fan Fest on June 21, Gearbox and 2K Games treated fans to a new story trailer that highlights the overall setting and narrative of the game. The 2-minute trailer showcased an overview of players’ journey in Kairos.
The story revolves around The Timekeeper and his Order’s cruel reign over the planet Kairos. It is up to the Vault Hunters to spark a revolution and overthrow his regime. With the help of Claptrap and the Crimson Resistance, players must gather allies, collect resources, and do everything they can to free the planet’s people.

Compared to Borderlands 3, the game will take on a much more serious tone, cutting back on its comedic elements and presenting a more grounded dialogue. It will be interesting to see how the developers shift from their "meme-style" approach given that the story takes place in a Totalitarian World with heavier consequences.
Borderlands 4 is set to be released on September 12, 2025 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. To stay up to date with the latest information about the game, check out our article below!
