Square Enix's NFT-Based Entertainment

Square Enix has announced a new form of NFT-based entertainment called Symbiogenesis, which combines collectible artworks with real game utility. The game features 10,000 unique NFT characters with various races and professions, each with a bust-up picture that can be used as a PFP. The NFT characters will be sold in chapters, with six chapters to be unveiled.

Symbiogenesis is categorized as Narrative-unlocked NFT entertainment, where players unlock the main story and each character's individual stories to unravel the world's mysteries. Players will progress through the main narrative and missions while unlocking the characters' stories. They must find items hidden throughout the Floating Continent and participate in the World Mission to determine the story's ending.

Symbiogenesis Content and System Requirements

The game can be divided into two play phases: Progressing through the main 6 chapters of story missions, and completing the quests to search for the items hidden on the floating continent. You must finish the Main Story and Missions to be able to participate in the Last World Quest. Missions are categorized as low-difficulty level and Quests to find hidden items are regarded as high difficulty level.

Slot Release Points given out once per day will be used to unlock the story held by the characters. You can choose to play solo (so you can also monopolize the assets) or co-op with up to 3 people.

The NFT game is compatible with iOS 14 or higher and Android, with the latest versions recommended. The game also recommends using Chrome as the browser, and the supported wallets are MetaMask, WalletConnect, and Web3Auth. The game supports Ethereum and Polygon blockchains.

Symbiogenesis Obtainable Items

Players have various ways of obtaining items in Symbiogenesis, such as tapping on suspicious areas on the map, using different pieces of information, and buying from the secondary market. If a player can't complete a quest to get the desired item, they can buy it from the secondary NFT market.

Similarly, players with extra items can sell them on the NFT Marketplace. To encourage this, Symbiogenesis will cover the NFT conversion gas fee for a limited number of times.

Does the 10,000 NFT Character Really Have Value?

Symbiogenesis has sparked controversy among NFT critics who argue that the game promotes the sale of digital assets with little to no inherent value. Unlike tangible objects that collectors can see, touch, and sell, these digital assets can be easily reproduced by the company and sell them to multiple people. It is like having a legendary card mass-produced, with ownership really only counting for bragging rights. Bragging rights that you had to pay for.

Critics have raised concerns that NFT-based games like Symbiogenesis could cause more environmental damage due to the excessive energy consumption required for blockchain technology. They also argue that such games may shift the focus from enjoyable gameplay to a mere pursuit of NFT ownership, giving it a more transactional feel that actual gamers could view negatively. Ultimately, this could detract from the gaming experience and make it less appealing to those seeking authentic entertainment.

Despite the controversy, Square Enix remains committed to developing Symbiogenesis and hopes to attract a new audience by combining NFT technology with compelling storytelling and gameplay. Symbiogenesis will launch soon, and it will be interesting to see how the game performs in the highly competitive gaming market.
