Cultural Approach for the Silent Hill Series
Researching Other Regions

Silent Hill f producer Motoi Okamoto shared his vision for expanding the horror series through a broader, more global cultural approach, explaining that the team is eager to focus on tying a variety of local folklore into the franchise’s signature horror, potentially allowing each setting to feel realistically distinct.
Historically, Silent Hill games, with the exception of Silent Hill f and Silent Hill: The Short Message, have always been set within the United States. Speaking to Inverse in a live interview, Okamoto said that they applied a different approach to the development of Silent Hill f, which involved careful research into the psychological and cultural aspects of its Japanese setting. As the producer mentioned, they wanted to highlight, "the distinct blend of realism and fantasy."
Building on that experience, Okamoto expressed enthusiasm about expanding this method further. Looking at the success of Silent Hill f receiving The Game Awards 2025 nominations, Okamoto noted that, "we believe we could perhaps take similar approaches with other cultures across the globe."

Though unable to reveal any specifics about ongoing development for the next Silent Hill title, Okamoto did share how Silent Hill f has helped shape the broader direction of the franchise and clarified the team’s creative interests moving forward.
"For example, in Central or South America, we could perhaps tap into the more local, shamanistic beliefs and see how that ties in. But we could also try to expand our horizons and look into other regions, like possibly Russia, Italy, or South Korea, because all those areas have their own unique types of belief systems. I believe that will be a gateway for us to expand our concepts further."
By experimenting with new cultural backdrops, the developers hope to both revive and strengthen the future of the franchise through fresh ideas and perspectives.

However, while Konami has clearly given serious thought to expanding Silent Hill into new regions, there are still practical challenges to overcome. "There is one issue: Central and South America do not have …prominent development studios for video games capable of handling an IP like Silent Hill," Okamoto explains.
For now, the team is exploring how each region’s rich traditions in stories, film, and literature could translate into a game, though exactly where and how those plans will take shape remains foggy and unclear to the public.
