The Spirit of the Samurai Overview
The Spirit of the Samurai is an action adventure Metroidvania that was released for the PC on December 12, 2024. It features 2d graphics and animation with a unique stop-motion flair, allowing for a distinct presentation. The game was developed by Digital Mind Games and published by Kwalee.
The title follows Takeshi, a Japanese samurai who wishes to save his village from the incoming invasion of the undead, led by a fearsome Oni. In his journey, he is accompanied by two kindred spirits, Chisai, a warrior cat, and Kodama, a brave little spirit with magical powers. However, during his travels, Takeshi is violently slain in battle. Before he perished, Kitsune, the spirit of the forest, granted him the power to transfer his soul, allowing him to live on through Chisai or Kodama, bringing along his memories and skills in combat. With the power to transfer his souls, the three must work together to utilize the spirit of the samurai between them, and another human body for Takeshi to inhibit, all in order to accomplish their quest of vanquishing the Oni.

The Spirit of the Samurai Gameplay
The Spirit of the Samurai is a 2D action adventure Metroidvania game where players control Takeshi, Chisai the cat, and Kodama the kindred spirit throughout.
As the Japanese samurai, he can use his katana, spear, or bow and arrow to fight foes by performing customizable combos that can be used for a variety of purposes and advantages. He can also call upon Chisai to attack enemies, opening them for fatal blows. As Chisai, players cannot fight, but instead sneakily avoid enemies and perform precise platforming in order to reach safety. As Kodama, they will have access to all of Takeshi’s skills with the blade, but will only be able to come to blows with those of their size.
