SMITE 2 Overview
SMITE 2 is a team-based action MOBA developed by Titan Forge Games and Hi-Rez Studios. Following its Closed Alpha debut on August 26, 2024, the game entered Free-to-Play early-access beta on January 14, 2025. With a larger roster of gods, new game modes, and regular updates, SMITE 2 continues to evolve during its development phase.
As a spiritual successor to SMITE, SMITE 2 retains the core gameplay of the original while introducing reworked gods, an expanded roster, enhanced graphics, and a brand-new game engine with UE5. True to its legacy as the battleground of the gods, SMITE 2 challenges two teams of five players to vie for dominance across multi-lane battlefields, wielding mythical powers, fighting legendary beasts, and duking it out in a MOBA experience of godly proportions.

SMITE 2 Gameplay
SMITE 2 is a 5v5 action MOBA played from a third-person perspective where players control gods and mythical figures from various pantheons as they fight for dominance in the battleground of the gods. Depending on the game mode, the map is split into 3-5 lanes, with a labyrinthine jungle area between each lane. Also dependent on the game mode is the goal of each team and their win conditions.
In the classic 5v5 format called Conquest, each team aims to destroy the enemy titan across the map. To get to it, they'll have to fight through a gauntlet of turrets in each lane, powerful
SMITE 2 Reviews
Not Quite a Sequel
The reception to SMITE 2 has been mixed, with skepticism surrounding its necessity as a sequel emerging as early as its announcement. Reviews from the Closed Alpha highlighted concerns over its lack of innovation, the reuse of similar gods requiring separate purchases, and an overall resemblance to its predecessor rather than a distinct sequel.
Aaron Bacabac of Game8 rated the game 78 out of 100, commending its improved graphics and rebalanced roster but questioning whether it warranted being a sequel rather than a major update to the original. Bacabac likened the situation to Overwatch 2, describing SMITE 2 as a sequel full of promise but overshadowed by a still-preferred original. While he acknowledged the game’s visual improvements, he expressed doubts about whether graphical enhancements alone could justify its existence.
Metro from Rectify Gaming offered a more positive perspective, praising the updated item store, new game engine, and the sense of nostalgia it evoked for longtime fans of the franchise. Metro highlighted the reworked stat system as particularly beneficial for new players, as it encouraged more experimentation in builds compared to the original game’s narrower focus on singular stats.
User reviews on platforms like Steam and Metacritic, however, were significantly more critical. Many questioned the sequel’s purpose, expressing dissatisfaction with legacy bonuses for longtime SMITE players, which they deemed insufficient and potentially exploitative. Hi-Rez Studios faced criticism for repeating questionable practices from the original SMITE in its successor.
Overall, SMITE 2 has struggled to establish itself as a distinct sequel, leaving many to see it as a product that falls short of expectations.
