Final Fantasy 16 Overview
Final Fantasy XVI (or Final Fantasy 16, abbreviated as FF16) is the 16th mainline entry to the long-running Final Fantasy series by Square Enix. It is the first of the franchise to fully invest into being an action-RPG, having no semblance of turn-based combat unlike the hybrids of its predecessors in FF15 and FF7 Remake. The game was internally developed by Square Enix’s Creative Business Unit 3 division under the direction of Hiroshi Takai, where Naoki Yoshida (otherwise known as Yoshi-P) had producer credits. The soundtrack was also mainly composed by Final Fantasy 14 composer Masayoshi Soken.
The entry follows Clive Rosfield, the son of the Archduke of Rosaria, tasked with protecting the kingdom and his younger brother, Joshua. Clive was seemingly destined to carry the mantle of the family and inherit the flames of the Phoenix, becoming the Eikon’s Dominant. However, Joshua was chosen as the successor, leaving Clive to find his own power and skill through his mastery of the sword. Tragedy strikes the kingdom and the family as the Dark Eikon, Ifrit, causes chaos.
Clive now ventures in a journey filled with blood and revenge as he continues to protect his little brother Joshua. He obtains powerful skills influenced by different Eikons and will utilize them in battle in order to attain his ultimate goal of vengeance.

Final Fantasy 16 Gameplay
FF16 is a pure action-RPG, where it fully embraces stylish combo-reliant battles. The game’s battle director, Ryota Suzuki, notably had previously worked on Devil May Cry 5, implementing various inspirations into the Final Fantasy title.
Players solely control Clive throughout the game, where he is able to perform moves in quick succession one after the other. He acquires multiple ‘stances’ that allow him to execute different Eikon-infused skills upon enemies. Players can also execute perfect blocks and parries, allowing him to negate damage and deal devastating counterattacks.
Clive eventually gains the power to transform into an Eikon himself, granting him powerful powers to use during climactic battles against other powerful Eikon who threaten his loved ones’ safeties.

A Welcome Return to Form for Final Fantasy
Final Fantasy 16 is what many consider to be the natural evolution for the series, doing away with the traditional turn-based combat and embracing modern action RPGs. However, the setting goes back to its roots with dark fantasy elements, shedding off much of the technologically-dominated titles that recently preceded it.
We at Game8 gave it an 88/100, citing how it moves the series to the right direction of modernity while still embracing its roots as a Final Fantasy title. IGN classifies it as an ‘Amazing’ game with a 9/10 rating, praising its fast action heavy combat that tests players’ reflexes, coupled with an excellent story and cast of characters. Gamespot similarly awards it with a 9/10, calling it a ‘Superb’ game full of incredible battles and moments alongside its emotional story. However, RockPaperShotgun notes that if the game was shorter, it would be leagues better, citing some of the bloated story and quests that broaden the gap between major happenings in the story.
Metacritic aggregated all reviews and has garnered a ‘Generally Favorable’ rating for both critics and users, where it sits at 87/100 and 8.4/10 respectively. In the PlayStation store, it has racked up a stunning 4.52/5 stars from 31,566 users. Meanwhile on Steam, it has received ‘Very Positive’ recent reviews, with ‘Mostly Positive’ from all user ratings.
