The future of Devil May Cry looks to be in limbo, as its longtime director has left the company after over 30 years. Will there be a next DMC game at all? Read on to see why we think so.
Will Capcom Make Another Devil May Cry Game?
Very Likely, Even Without Itsuno At the Helm
Devil May Cry has just seen its longtime champion and director, Hideaki Itsuno, leave Capcom after over 30 years and 5 months of being with the company. Itsuno was known for directing DMC 3, 4, and 5 (we don’t talk about 2), and with him out of the company, are the chances of a 6th entry to the hack-n-slash action series completely dashed away? Contrary to popular belief, it’s very likely that a DMC 6 is going to be made, and perhaps could already be underway as of writing– just not under the helm of Itsuno.
It’s no question that Devil May Cry as a series has had its ups and downs, with how the first title was originally made to be a Resident Evil game, the tragic second game that Itsuno was made to deal with at the latter half of development, the troubled creation of Devil May Cry 4, and the infamous DmC reboot that gave us El Donte. However, after each ‘failure’ seemed to be some sort of retribution that always came eventually to fix the past. DMC1 became a surprise hit, Itsuno famously was horrified at his name being cited as the director of DMC2 and vowed to redeem himself with the series’s best in DMC3, DMC4 Special Edition arriving almost a decade later to salvage the original’s lackingness, and of course, DMC5 came to fruition after the reboot proved to be unsuccessful.
Many see Itsuno leaving to be the next ‘low’ in the series’ lifespan, or maybe even the end of Devil May Cry as we know it. But that couldn’t be any more wrong, as DMC is one of Capcom’s most popular, bestselling, and beloved franchises, and that’s saying something with the astronomical decades worth of gaming catalog from the Japanese gaming giant. It would be absolutely remiss for them to not capitalize on the massive success and resurgence DMC has had over the past few years with the release of DMC5, alongside the cult following it has garnered from DMC5 Special Edition that popularized Vergil and his theme song, ‘Bury the Light,’ which could arguably be one of the most listened to songs EVER in the gaming industry. As of writing, the song has over 110 million plays on Spotify alongside an unofficial upload of the song on YouTube with a whopping 132 million views.
In terms of recent news, the franchise is also coming to the mainstream with an entirely animated series on Netflix, starring the suave devil hunter Dante himself bringing his crazy sword-fighting and gun-slinging action in all of his glory!
Capcom definitely sees Devil May Cry as a worthy franchise to continue, and with the company’s recent track record over the years full of hits and no misses, from the Resident Evil Remakes, Monster Hunter, Dragon’s Dogma, to Street Fighter, they obviously place DMC alongside those gaming giants worth paying attention to.
Devil May Cry 6 isn’t an if, but a when, and the only thing to worry about would be how it’d fare without the veteran lead of Itsuno.
Avid DMC, Capcom, and general video game fan and enthusiast Maximilian Dood on YouTube and Twitch also seems to think so, citing that "games aren’t made by just one person," and that he theorizes that Itsuno left the company specifically because he was being made to captain DMC6. He continues to guess that the game director, looking back and seeing that he has done all he could with the series and the company itself, saw his time to leave for other ventures. Max posits that the next generation of creators that Itsuno fostered during his over 30-year tenure within the company will be the next to try and take his spot, ushering in new ideas for the series that even the veteran might not have thought of in the first place. Itsuno was once inspired by a feature from the failed DmC reboot, and later on incorporated them into DMC5. It certainly looks like Itsuno wants those who developed DMC5 with him to carry the torch of the series forward as he goes on to make other games to fulfill his creativity.
In summary, though it hasn’t been confirmed, the chances of Devil May Cry seeing another entry to its franchise is very high with the success it has, the popularity it has garnered, and how they are still committing to promote and adapt it in other platforms such as an animated series. It might take a while for fans to see the sequel, but one day, the time will come and so shall we. While we wait, we can always pass the time by giving Bury the Light another spin to get a little motivated.
