Wind Waker HD Switch 2 Port is Still "On the Table"

Image

Wind Waker’s GameCube version getting released for Switch 2 does not mean that Wind Waker HD will not get ported. Read on to learn more about Nintendo’s thoughts on this matter and Wind Waker HD’s improvements to the original game.

Nintendo Opening All Options For Other Wind Waker Versions To Be Ported

Wind Waker’s GameCube version will be coming to the Switch 2 as announced during the Nintendo Direct for Switch 2 on April 2. This announcement caused fans to wonder whether Wind Waker HD would ever get ported to the next-gen console.

However, Nintendo of America Senior Vice President of Product Development Nate Bihldorff clarified this sentiment. In an episode uploaded by Kinda Funny Games Daily on April 9, host Tim Gettys reported that he spoke with Bihldorff during a Switch 2 press event in New York and within that conversation, the topic about Wind Waker HD’s possibly Switch 2 port was brought up.

Gettys noted, "I did ask if having The Wind Waker on NSO percludes it from the Switch 2 getting the actual Wii U port at some point, and he was very quick to say "no, all options are on the table". Obviously, nothing is confirmed one way or another."

First Released in 2002

The original Wind Waker on the GameCube was first released in 2002 in Japan and 2003 in the West. A decade later, Wind Waker HD was ported to the Wii U in 2013. Major improvements for this version include an upgrade from 480p to HD visuals, lighting, gyro controls for weapons, faster sailing, and more gameplay adjustments. Since the GameCube library is exclusive to the Switch 2, porting Wind Waker HD could be the only way for owners of the original Switch to play the game.

Meanwhile, the Nintendo Switch Online classics game libraries are now being renamed as Nintendo Classics. According to Nintendo, "Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members will soon be able to play The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, F-ZERO GX, and SOULCALIBUR II on Nintendo Switch 2, with more games coming in the future." Additionally, some games will include in-game options such as retro screen filter and widescreen gameplay.
