FF15 Overview
Final Fantasy XV (otherwise known as Final Fantasy 15, or abbreviated as either FFXV or FF15) is the 15th installment in Square Enix’s long-running RPG series. The game was previously known as Final Fantasy VERSUS XIII, a project helmed by Tetsuya Nomura since 2006. However, due to troubled pre-production and development, it was later officially rebranded as Final Fantasy 15 in 2013, where Nomura was replaced by Hajime Tabata as the director. The game went on to be released for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on November 29, 2016.
The title stars prince Noctis and his friends, Gladio, Ignis, and Prompto as they go on a road trip across the world of Eos to avenge their fallen kingdom of Lucis. They started their adventure with the knowledge they were accompanying Noctis to his wedding with princess Lunafreya as a peace treaty between the kingdom of Lucis and the approaching Niflheim empire. However, as they left the capital city of Insomnia, the empire commenced their attack, killing Noctis’ father, the king.
The four friends must now travel the lands, fighting monsters, gathering ingredients, acquiring weapons, growing in strength, and thwarting the plans of the Niflheim empire. They go from location to location, city to city, in hopes of growing stronger and gathering intel in order to defeat the empire and recover their stolen peace.

FF15 Gameplay
FF15 is an open-world action-adventure RPG, where players mainly control Noctis in his journey. They will be travelling the roads within the royal car, the Regalia, to reach their destinations. However, at night, the daemons start to spawn and become obstacles for the party of four. During combat, players start out as Noctis but can freely switch between the four heroes. Noctis has the powerful warp-strike which allows him to teleport to his weapon’s location at any time he chooses. Gladio can block and parry enemy attacks and perform powerful attacks. Ignis can switch between elements to infuse his weapons to change his playstyle. Prompto carries a variety of firearms to precisely shoot enemy weak points or deal explosive damage.
There are also ‘Link Moves’ where characters are able to perform moves together under certain conditions during battle, such as attacking a vulnerable enemy or when Noctis wields specific weapons.
FF15 Reviews
Flawed and Unfinished Masterpiece
Final Fantasy 15 was released to above average reviews, where many praised its incredible graphics, tremendous soundtrack, and the relationship between the four friends. However, many criticized its poor and segmented storytelling, its monotonous gameplay, and empty open world.

Kotaku notes how frustrating the game can be at times, but reaches incredible highs as well. VG247 mentions how the overall story is disappointing, but still ends it all with a very strong ending, highlighting the well-written characters.

FF15 Announcement Trailer
Announcement Trailer
The announcement trailer is the surprise reveal and rebranding of the game from its previous FF Versus XIII title. However, the video notably features content that was ultimately cut from the game upon release.
FF15 Trivia
⚫︎ FF15 was previously FFVersusXIII, where it was in development under the direction of longtime Final Fantasy character designer and Kingdom Hearts director Tetsuya Nomura.
⚫︎ As FF15, it was then helmed by Final Fantasy 7: Crisis Core director Hajime Tabata.
⚫︎ Majority of the developed content from FFVersusXIII was scrapped, where only names and likeness to certain characters were retained.
⚫︎ Though the project in total took a decade to launch, from announcement to release (2006-2016), it can be estimated that FF15 as it came out only had 3-4 years of development.
⚫︎ Several more post-launch content was planned for the game, including Episodes starring Aranea and Lunafreya. However, they were eventually cancelled.
⚫︎ Many regard the title’s true ending to be in the published novel "Final Fantasy XV: The Dawn of the Future" which featured all cut content and DLC that the development team had planned to include in the game.
