God of War Ragnarök Overview
God of War Ragnarök by Santa Monica Studio is an action-adventure epic originally released for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 in November 2022. A PC release followed on September 19, 2024.
As the ninth installment in the God of War series and the direct sequel to 2018’s critically acclaimed soft reboot of the God of War IP, the game follows Kratos and his teenage son, Atreus, as they navigate the deadly Fimbulwinter—a prophesied long winter that heralds Ragnarök, the end of all things.
God of War Ragnarök has an expansive single-player campaign, where players embody Kratos on a journey through the Nine Realms, seeking a way to avert Ragnarök. The gameplay blends intense third-person combat with exploration, collectibles, and a robust upgrade system for Kratos and his arsenal. Cinematic storytelling and epic boss battles, both staples to the God of War series, punctuate the experience further.
The recently released free DLC, Valhalla, adds a new game mode, introducing roguelike mechanics to the God of War formula. Players can now traverse the Norse afterlife, collecting random boons and upgrades as they face new challenges in this replayable expansion.

God of War Ragnarök Gameplay
God of War Ragnarök is a third-person action-adventure game where players take control of Kratos, wielding his legendary weapons as he journeys across the Nine Realms. The gameplay emphasizes combat and exploration, inviting players to traverse richly diverse biomes, from Vanaheim’s lush forests to Alfheim’s star-lit sands.
Combat in Ragnarök is combo-driven and highly dynamic, capturing Kratos’ relentless fighting style as he seamlessly switches between his iconic Leviathan Axe, Blades of Chaos, and the all-new Draupnir Spear. Players are encouraged to stay on the offensive, using aerial combos and stagger mechanics to overpower enemies with ease while also avoiding or parrying their attacks.
Kratos’ combat arsenal has been expanded in Ragnarök to include a variety of shields and enhanced Spartan Rage abilities, as well as new spirit summons and a fleshed-out upgrade tree for Atreus. These auxiliary options are unique to Ragnarök, building upon the foundation set in God of War (2018).
Progression-wise, the game is almost completely linear, guiding players through the main storyline with occasional side activities, including collectible hunts, secret boss fights, and hidden areas for those eager to explore beyond the primary path.
