Combat is the Main Draw

Coming from the same developers that made Punishing Gray Raven, Kuro Games has made a reputation for creating what is arguably the best combat system for a gacha game out there. It’s not any different for Wuthering Waves, as the combat is the main aspect that will make you want to keep playing the game.

With a robust parry and dodge mechanic and specific character gimmicks and combos, the game rewards skill when it comes to its battles as you could potentially beat bosses that are much higher level than you are, provided you have the skill to do so.

Players have been raving about the game’s combat mechanics, especially with how they enhance the game’s boss fights. It makes for amazing sequences as the game feels like an action-movie when you start to dodge, parry, and slash your way through the enemy’s defenses.

Fast-Paced Movement and Navigation

Image

With an open-world design similar to Genshin Impact, it’s important that players have a way to get around the map quickly. In Wuthering Waves, the game allows players to sprint without using stamina AND have a multitude of tools for you to move around like the glider, grappling hook, and wall running. A simple QoL movement mechanic is being able to vault over small gaps and clamber higher cliffs to make exploration a breeze.

Amazing Visual and Sound Effects

Image

To enhance the game’s already amazing gameplay, the visual and sound effects that the game also contribute to the experience. The snappy animations, cut-ins, proper use of slo-mo, and other visual tricks make the game a great treat for the eyes during what are supposed to be battles that induce motion sickness. The sound effects are also another aspect that enhances the combat, further reinforcing the weighty fights that the game already has.

What People Disliked About Wuthering Waves

Optimization Issues

Image

One of the complaints about the game is the performance. During the beta, the game was able to run in 120 FPS mode, but this was removed during the full release as the developers stated that it was causing problems during motion. Another issue is the amount of stuttering that players have encountered during gameplay, which has caused players to point out the game’s optimization issues with regards to its visuals.

While these issues are mainly annoying, a more critical issue regarding the game’s use of memory was also brought up in the full release. It seems that the game’s memory consistently leaks, which forces your computer to use more of its RAM the longer you run the game. While there are workarounds like restarting the game or PC if need be just to flush out the memory usage, doing so will force you out of the game instead of actually enjoying the game.

Text-Heavy Slog

Image

The main issue that players have with Wuthering Waves’ story is how much text it bombards you with as soon as you start and how much it piles onto it the farther you go. While, of course, the story is all a matter of preference, it’s consistently brought up that the game’s text-heavy nature is one of the biggest problems that the game currently faces, barring the optimization issues.

The worst part about the game’s text-heavy aspect is that it isn’t limited to the main story, as even the side quests suffer from this symptom as well. It harms the game’s narrative and potential to interest players, as they might get bored of the game when they realize how much reading is involved.

Different Gacha Rates

Image

The rates and mechanics for the character and weapon banners are different from each other. The character banners follow the same standard that the Hoyoverse games have been using, which is a hard pity cap set at the number of pulls and a fifty-fifty chance for the featured character. At the same time, the weapon banners have a guaranteed weapon of choice after hitting the hard pity. The latter is much more free-to-play friendly, as you could choose the weapon that you want after rolling for it so much, while the former could potentially make you lose out on a character you were looking forward to getting into your team.

Regrettably, Wuthering Waves did not go for the same gacha rates and mechanics that Punishing Gray Raven did. It was very free-to-play friendly in Kuro Games’ preceding game and has none of the fifty-fifty nonsense after hitting the hard cap, which was also lower than Wuthering Waves’ current hard pity cap.

Wuthering Waves User Score and Rating

Kuro Games has delivered yet another gacha game that has a strong gameplay aspect that leaves you wanting to play even more. However, the game has a lot of issues that need to be ironed out, as it’s currently being held back by bad optimization, performance issues, and dialogue that’s way too text-heavy.

The general consensus of the game is that it’s a game that’s worth your time if you enjoy fast-paced action-RPG gameplay with gacha mechanics. You may have to grapple with a ton of issues at the moment, but with Kuro Games at the helm and knowing their reputation for listening to their fanbase, it’s only going to get better from here on, and honestly, it’s already at a pretty good start.
