Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3+4 Overall - 80/100

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3+4 is a nostalgic field trip back to everyone’s favorite skate parks, warehouses, and stages. It’s a case of using what worked already to full effect since the style of the remake is similar to the previous iteration. While most aspects are great, there are a couple of issues regarding the faithfulness of the remake and the missing music. Other than these two issues, it’s a remake that you don’t want to miss, especially for those who were avid fans of the original releases.

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3+4 Story - 6/10

There isn’t much to the game’s story other than you skating around different places and completing certain tasks and challenges. Though there isn’t much to the experience of the story since you’re pretty much left to your own devices for the most part, it also doesn’t take away that skaters are looking to find that one place where they can land the gnarliest trick in their repertoire.

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3+4 Gameplay - 8/10

While the difference between the first dual remake and this release isn’t much, the core gameplay and controls remain the best aspect of the series. It strikes a balance between easy to pull off and hard to master, given that you can chain just about any trick if you’re good enough. Moreover, there are a lot of new things to like about the game, like new levels, multiplayer, create-a-park, and more. But, some things were changed for the worse as well, like the singular Career Mode and the extreme change to make the fourth installment similar to the previous games rather than keeping similar to the original games. The gameplay didn't suffer, but the foundation of the remakes doesn't flow with the original making some of their levels worse.

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3+4 Visuals - 9/10

The visuals of the game are amazing. Not only are the character models great, but also the new animations for pulling off tricks are just something to behold. The remakes have done well to replicate the looks of the real skaters in-game. Lastly, the stages are almost as faithful to the original while making them look beautiful as well.

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3+4 Audio - 8/10

One of the more memorable aspects of the Tony Hawk games is the audio design. The sound effects remain stellar, from the satisfying feedback of landing tricks down to the ambient sounds that a skateboard makes. Sadly, it’s not all great. Despite the soundtrack still being great, there are a lot of missing songs from the soundtrack, and this was one of the highlights for returning players.

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3+4 Value for Money - 9/10

For $49.99, you’re getting two full-blown Tony Hawk games for the price of a double AA game. The amount of content to unlock and finish will keep you skating for hours on end, which has been one of the main appeals of the series. Keep in mind, however, that the game isn’t entirely faithful to the original and that some changes, minor and major, may affect the overall experience.

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3+4 Review: A Shred Sesh Back to Memory Lane

Skateboarding has been an iconic sport since it became popular back in the 90s. While I was never good at it or deeply involved in the activity, it was always something that I thought was cool. What I was better at was playing video games, and when the first few Tony Hawk skateboarding games were out, I was enjoying my time in fictional skate parks and pulling off moves that didn’t seem possible.

I vividly remember my enjoyment of the games, which was why I was very excited when they announced a remake of the games, especially now, when arcade games aren’t so popular. Seeing that this isn’t their first rodeo of remaking the Pro Skater series, does the remake live up to the originals? Or is it just another fresh coat of paint?

Patterned to the Remakes

Image

Let’s get the obvious thing out of the way: Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3+4 is patterned after the previous remake. So, visuals and gameplay-wise, they are pretty similar. And that’s not to say that’s a bad thing. The remakes definitely got the visuals and the controls down, making them modern and obviously better looking, and changing them might’ve been for the worse. What you can expect is that if you’ve played the previous remake of 1+2, then you’re pretty much set on expecting the same few things for 3+4. This means that both Career Modes are basically combined, and you can play both on one character and even switch characters at will.

While the maps are obviously different, the single-player Career Mode pattern is mostly the same. Doing objectives will unlock the next map, and doing challenges can unlock certain cosmetics, characters, etc. The strength of the game lies in the improved maps, and if anything, it does pay to remember the locations of the secrets, challenge sections, and more. They’re more or less in the same location as the original game.

Image

There are also some key additions, like new characters based on the current popular and professional skaters like Yuto Horigome, Rayssa Leal, Margielyn Didal, and more. Surprisingly, even Bam Margera made it in as an unlockable character. Kudos to Iron Galaxy for making that happen, especially with how involved he was in the original games. As with most remakes, the addition of Photo Mode is also most welcome, as it shows off the graphical upgrades that the remakes were able to achieve.

Likewise, Create-a-Park is also great since that adds to the game’s potentially limitless value as players start to get used to using the creator tool. They even added a new tool called Create-a-Goal to bolster the creation process of player skate parks and how they can craft their own unique objectives. I, for one, like that they’re going for this approach because they understand that they shouldn’t mess around too much with the game’s design.

Where it becomes problematic, however, is how the little things have changed and how the core has changed because of these little things.

Re-imagining vs. Remaking

Image

Let me reiterate, there’s nothing inherently wrong with the game’s foundation since it’s already very good. The main issue is that Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 and 4 were the games that kick-started their experimentation with newer gameplay loops. To be more specific, the latter was the one that started introducing an open-world design as opposed to a level-by-level basis.

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 had a specific Career Mode for each character that was in the game, and since every character had different fortes, some objectives were tailored to their expertise. This time around, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3+4 lets you choose any character, and the progression would carry over. To those who were familiar with the original game, they would know that certain placements of medals and secrets weren’t easily accessible by just any character.

Image

The more egregious change was transforming the fourth installment’s Career Mode into something similar to the previous versions, AKA timed-challenge maps. While you can change the time limit to an hour instead of the usual 2 minutes, it still doesn’t change the fact that they completely overhauled the design. This might rub people the wrong way, especially if they’re expecting a faithful remake rather than a reimagination to fit the current design.

The changes are more obvious in Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 4’s maps, as they’ve become more streamlined and changed to fit in the remake’s design. On top of this, they’ve made certain maps way different than their original counterparts, the most notable of which is the Zoo level in the fourth game.

Even the Music?!

Image

One of the most memorable parts of the Tony Hawk games is the music. Now, I’m not saying that the current selection is bad. All of the songs in the current release are in the rock, punk, and hip-hop genres, and they all fit the mold. The issue is that this release is mainly fueled by nostalgia, and leaving this out is a baffling decision.

Now, there could be issues with copyright and rights to add the songs back in, and I’m not an authority to know which songs should make it back in or why they’re not in there in the first place. Regardless of what happened, this was a big miss on their part since this easily could’ve been another smash hit that plays on nostalgia.

Still Great, Regardless

Image

So, even with all that yapping about the changes and unfaithfulness to the original, does Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3+4 live up to the originals? I would agree. The remakes have done a great job of recreating the arcade feel of solving a skate park to chain the longest combos and tally up the biggest score totals. They’ve even done a great job at keeping things up-to-date and are willing to make it a game that’ll last forever with the amount of creative tools they’ve given to the players.

It’s a game that has an unexpectedly low skill floor and an unimaginably high skill ceiling, limited by the player’s creativity to push to the next trick to lengthen their combos. Am I mad that the remake isn’t particularly faithful to the original, especially when it comes to Pro Skater 4? Yeah, a little. But if this means that there’s hope for an Underground and American Wasteland remake, then I’d happily take it.

Is Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3+4 Worth It?

Yes, But It’s Not Exactly the Same

Image

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3+4 is more of what was already offered in its previous version. At $49.99, it’s an absolute steal for the amount of content that you get for its price. This, however, comes at the expense of two big problems that players should be aware of before buying the game.

First, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 4 was heavily changed to fit the gameplay of the previous games in the same series, meaning that you shouldn’t expect the same open-world design from the original version. In addition to this, certain liberties were taken to change the Career Modes of both games, meaning that they won’t be completely the same as the original.

Second, there’s a significant lack of songs that didn’t make it in the final cut. This may or may not be a big reason for most players, but seeing that the game is already built on nostalgia, the lack of certain things may bother players.

If interested players are okay with these problems, then we highly recommend trying the game out, as there’s nothing quite like it, other than the other games in the series.
