Everything We Know About Skate Story
Skate Story Plot
In Skate Story, you control a demon made of glass and pain. After making a deal with the Devil, the demon's only chance at freedom lies in a seemingly impossible task: skate to the moon and swallow it. As you navigate through the nine layers of hell, you'll have to grind, ollie, and kickflip your way across desolate areas like the ash-laden Emptylands. The journey is anything but straight froward, as you'll also have to destroy demons and save tortured souls.
Skate Story Setting
Skate Story's Underworld is surreal—hazy, ash-filled landscapes—where you'll navigate endless corridors and barren hills. The world is abstract, full of of jagged lines and shifting, smoke-filled environments that feel both dreamlike and dangerous.
Skate Story Characters
Crystalline Demon
The protagonist, an unnamed crystalline demon, forged in the depths of the Underworld, struck a deal that would make even Faust blush. He traded his fiery torment for a skateboard and a shot at redemption. He now has to skate to the moon and swallow it for the Devil to free him.
Skate Story Gameplay
Skate Story is a game that defies easy categorization. It's a skating game, yes, but it's also a surreal, psychedelic adventure that blends elements of Vaporwave, surrealism, and existentialism. The game's levels are a mix of hyper-realistic concrete textures and surreal, almost dreamlike elements. The Skater, your avatar, is a kaleidoscopic glass figure, and the disembodied voices that echo through the levels are both judgmental and haunting.
Despite its surreal elements, Skate Story's skating mechanics are surprisingly grounded. The game offers a sense of speed and control, and the tight camera focuses on the Skater's movements. However, you won't just be doing ollis, kickflips, and grinds. While the tricks and jumps in the early game are relatively simple, they become more complex and challenging as you progress.
Players accelerate by mashing the A button, propelling the character into a flow state as they zip through the neon-drenched levels. The core skating mechanics revolve around a rhythm of button presses, where timing is crucial to executing tricks flawlessly. Each trick can be timed perfectly for a boost.
There are also exploration levels designed to encourage players to discover hidden paths and obstacles. You'll zip down narrow corridors, leap over hazardous neon nettles, and navigate environments inspired by everyday locations like museum gift shops—all while juggling the risks associated with your character's fragility.
Pair this with an chill and often upbeat soundtrack composed by Blood Cultures and John Fio, and you're immediately teleported into post-modern work of art.
