Plushie from the Sky Overall Score - 68/100

Plushie from the Sky offers a quirky, janky at times, yet undeniably charming souls-like adventure. While its visuals may seem a bit dated and its controls occasionally awkward, these aspects somehow enhance its unique appeal. Fans of the souls-like genre will appreciate its challenging yet rewarding combat. However, it's worth noting that its boss fights can be particularly challenging and reliant on cheesy tactics. Overall, if you're a Souls fan and you're eagerly anticipating Shadow of Erdtree, you should give this game a try. It's a great opportunity to practice your dodging skills and it also offers entertaining moments built for streaming.

Plushie from the Sky Story - 6/10

While Plushie from the Sky does feature a story, it's not the main focus of the game. Like many souls-like titles, the narrative takes a backseat to the gameplay. It's a whimsical, goofy, and straightforward tale that doesn't demand much attention.

Plushie from the Sky Gameplay - 8/10

Although the combat and platforming mechanics in Plushie from the Sky can feel clunky and janky at times, they gradually become more enjoyable once you get used to it, particularly during boss fights. The game encourages a cheesy approach to combat, where dodging becomes your best tactic but I can’t deny it’s absurdly fun. The bosses offer both fun and challenging encounters, adding a sense of thrill and tension to the gameplay.

Plushie from the Sky Visuals - 7/10

Plushie from the Sky is a game crafted entirely by one person, which explains its somewhat outdated graphics and occasional odd-looking assets. You might encounter some FPS drops in certain areas, and spotting enemies can be tricky at times. The bosses can also seem a bit awkward looking at times. However, amidst these quirks, there are some visually striking and creative areas scattered throughout the game, and its overall janky charm adds to its unique appeal. Fortunately, the visuals improve significantly as you progress through the subsequent levels of the game.

Plushie from the Sky Audio - 5/10

Regrettably, the sound design in the game is its weakest link. It comes across as rather generic, and the way it pops up and fades out slowly in certain areas can feel a bit awkward rather than charming. While the music isn't necessarily bad, it’s pretty forgettable, failing to leave a lasting impression.

Plushie from the Sky Value for Money - 8/10

Although I personally find the game enjoyable and quite charming, I must admit it's not going to appeal to everyone. It doesn't boast the best graphics or smoothest gameplay. However, if you're a fan of souls-like games, you'll likely find some enjoyment here. Plus, supporting a solo developer is always commendable, especially when you can see the passion and appeal behind the game, despite its rough edges. If you decide to give it a try, I can assure you that you'll have a fantastic time with this game.

Plushie from the Sky Review: A Wacky, Clunky, But Charming Souls-Like

Image

Let's be honest: this game isn't winning any awards for its graphics. From its outdated environments to its weird-looking enemies, it's clear that visuals aren't its strong suit. The occasional FPS drops and hard-to-spot enemies can be frustrating.

However, there's a certain charm to its old-school aesthetic, reminiscent of games you'd find on Newgrounds. While it may not have the stunning visuals of Stellar Blade, it fully embraces its quirks, making for a charming, silly souls-like experience. Thankfully, the environment in later areas become more creative and visually striking.

Right from the start, you're dropped into a mountainous world reminiscent of one of the beginning levels of Super Mario Odyssey, taking on the role of an adorable angel descending from the heavens. Your mission? Find your way back home.
Image

I highly recommend playing with a controller for smoother control output. The gameplay follows the familiar souls-like formula but with a faster, floaty feel. If you're not a fan of the slower pace typical of souls-like games, this might be just what you're looking for.

Don't be quick to judge, though; the game really picks up as you progress. Visually, the first level might seem lackluster, but stick with it as I promise, the enemies and boss battles become much more engaging and memorable.

Combat involves melee attacks with your trusty teddy bear, which range from light to heavy, and shooting, which consumes ammo that you can replenish by defeating enemies. Smacking enemies around and leveling up feels satisfying, especially when you can choose which attributes to develop at save points.

But the real highlight? The boss fights. They're massive, goofy, and challenging, requiring you to master dodge rolls and learn their patterns and phases. It's a true test of skill and incredibly rewarding when you emerge victorious.

Don't get me wrong though; it can still be incredibly challenging and punishing at times, but it's just as enjoyable to goof around. Plushie from the Sky is tailor-made for streaming challenges and appeals to Dark Souls masters looking for a new test of skill.

Fun Souls-Like Combat and Difficulty

Image

What sets this game apart and adds to its enjoyment is its fast-paced and floaty combat, a departure from the slower pace of other souls-like games. I appreciate how swiftly you can navigate through areas and engage in combat, which makes deaths feel less frustrating since you can quickly get back to facing bosses. The inclusion of double jumps, flying, and climbing enhances the feeling of freedom, turning the environment into your playground. Despite its challenges, this aspect adds to its charm, as you embody an adorable yet formidable anime angel wreaking havoc in the world you've entered.

Bosses are Wacky and Memorable

Image

The bosses in this game boast some of the quirkiest and downright dumbest designs you'll ever come across. From a bizarre, grotesque troll that spins like a ball after shooting its hand out, to a colossal tree and a rocking horse, you'll encounter a truly eclectic mix. It's crazy, absurd, and downright comical how you transition from battling biblical demons to facing off against a cactus. While their textures and designs may seem odd, they exude a unique charm that’s really entertaining and memorable.

Graphical Issues Here and There and FPS Drops in Certain Areas

Image

This game doesn't boast top-tier visuals. While it does have its charming moments and has some areas that are visually creative and pleasing, it's not going to win any beauty contests. Even for me, especially in the beginning, it felt reminiscent of playing a game from the early days of Newgrounds. However, it does improve over time. The level designs become more appealing, although the game still has its flaws all throughout, including FPS drops in certain areas.

Forgettable Soundtrack

Image

I wish they had opted for a more wild and eccentric soundtrack to match the game's vibe. Unfortunately, the current soundtrack is rather forgettable, generic, and can be dull at times.

Is Plushie from the Sky Worth It?

If You’re Streaming It or a Fan of Souls-Like Games

Image

Plushie from the Sky is one of those games that has its own unique charm, despite its flaws. While I found enjoyment in its quirky gameplay, I recognize that it may not be everyone's cup of tea, even when considering its relatively low price of $12. With a playtime of around 4 hours, it's a short but challenging experience, and there's not much to do once you've completed it aside from starting new game plus. Additionally, its visuals may not be the most polished, and it can feel a bit rough around the edges at times.

However, if you're a fan of souls-like games, this is definitely worth checking out, especially if you enjoy streaming. It's the kind of game that provides both entertainment and a challenge, similar to titles like Jump-King. Plus, there's currently a 20% discount available at launch, so it's a good time to grab it if you're even remotely interested. Just be prepared for what you're getting into, and you're sure to have a good time. If you decide to give it a try, I can assure you that you'll have a fantastic time with this game.
