Octopath Traveler 0 Gameplay
For the first time in the series, players begin by creating a custom protagonist. They can choose their character’s appearance, voice, skills, and even favorite dish. Rather than the fixed eight starters of previous titles, players can recruit over 30 additional allies in Octopath Traveler 0, forming a party of up to eight active members at once.
During combat, this eight-member squad is split into front-row vanguards and back-row rearguards, and players can swap between rows mid-battle. The game retains core Octopath Traveler features like the Break and Boost system, but adapts them for the expanded team size. Exploiting enemy weaknesses reduces their Shield Points, and once reduced down to zero, their shield becomes broken, rendering them unable to act and reducing their defenses. Players accumulate Boost Points (BP) every turn, which can be used to enhance attacks, recovery skills, and support effects, with BP now charging at twice the speed of prior titles to accommodate larger parties.
Ultimate Techniques and Action Skills

Each character has access to character-specific "Ultimate Techniques." These feature a gauge with three phases, with power increasing subsantially up to the third phase.
Party members can also learn "Action Skills" that are then transferable among characters, much like equipment. The protagonist is uniquely positioned here, as they are the only character who can change jobs and acquire multiple Ultimate Techniques.
As in earlier games, recruited characters possess unique "Path Actions," but these have been significantly extended. Characters can now influence recruitment, obtain items, engage NPCs, and help with town-building tasks. Path Actions thus serve both in-world interaction and gameplay progression, with players using them to obtain vital information about local cuisine or architecture to inspire and customize their own settlement.
Town Building
One of the more notable new systems is town reconstruction. After a certain catastrophe, players rebuild their home settlement with a lot of freedom, placing structures (such as houses and workshops) on a grid map and using resources like wood, stone, and cloth. The town can house more than 100 invited NPCs and be decorated with over 200 items.
The town provides direct benefits to the main journey; facilities like the Training Ground, for instance, can automatically increase experience for the large roster of allies, and shops and cooking provide buffs and enhancements.
Octopath Traveler 0 Story Plot
Octopath Traveler 0 begins in Wishvale, a town located on the continent of Orsterra, during its annual Day of Reverence. At the festival’s climax, as the ceremonial blue flame is about to be lit, the settlement is suddenly engulfed in flames by a mysterious assailant. The player-created protagonist survives this attack. Faced with ruin, that character must choose between two overarching plots: one of restoration, rebuilding what was lost, or one of revenge, pursuing those responsible for the attack.
From that point forward, the protagonist travels across Orsterra to recruit a large ensemble of characters and form a party of up to eight individuals. Among the early companions are Stia, the protagonist’s childhood friend; Phenn, a watchman who served as a protector of Wishvale; and Lauranna, a cleric devoted to the Sacred Flame faith, each introducing their own reasons for joining the journey.
