MARVEL vs CAPCOM Collection Overall - 84/100
Marvel vs Capcom returns in style! It’s amazing enough that Capcom decided to re-release these older titles for modern consoles, but to make a collection out of them while adding quality-of-life improvements was the icing on the cake. It’s seven games all packaged in one collection, while having tons of gallery items available for the player to view and unlock. It’s more Marvel; what more could you ask for?
MARVEL vs CAPCOM Collection Story - 5/10
These older titles don’t really have a story aside from being fan service for having both Marvel and Capcom characters duking it out. If you count the couple of secret characters that are included in the older titles since they have some sort of lore behind them, then maybe you could argue these as good character representation.
MARVEL vs CAPCOM Collection Gameplay - 10/10
The collection includes six fighting games from the Marvel Versus series and one beat ‘em up game (The Punisher) that sparked the whole collaboration between both companies. It’s safe to say that there’s a ton of gameplay in the collection, with one of them revered as one of the best fighting games of all time. On top of seven games to play, the games also received additional quality of life improvements across the board like training mode, online lobbies, rollback netcode, and more.
MARVEL vs CAPCOM Collection Visuals - 10/10
It is undeniable that the spritework and animations done in the Marvel Versus series are some of the best-looking graphics in the history of fighting games. After all these years, you’d think that they’d look dated, but somehow they withstand the test of time. With the new Gallery mode, it even showcases the concept art, developer documents, and never-before-seen artworks throughout the series.
Additionally, they even give you the option to change the display of the game by adding filters to simulate the classic experience. Of course, it’s not the same as an actual CRT monitor, but it’s appreciated that they included these options.
MARVEL vs CAPCOM Collection Audio - 9/10
The music, sound effects, and voice acting still sound memorable after all these years. If anything, it actually sounds a lot better this time around, as it sounds a lot clearer. Aside from the obvious nostalgia hit, the game even has a jukebox mode for players to play the tracks included in the previous titles. However, some might actually point out that there are missing tracks in some titles, as some ports of previous titles added new tracks that aren’t included in the collection.
MARVEL vs CAPCOM Collection Value for Money - 8/10
For $49.99, you’ll be getting seven games in one. In terms of value alone, you’ll be getting six different fighting games that all have their own layer of depth to learn as well as a beat ‘em up that you can enjoy with a friend. However, the price point, along with the fact that most of the games you’re getting are fighting games, might turn people off since not everyone enjoys the genre. I would recommend waiting for a sale for those who are interested in picking the collection but aren’t super into fighting games, as this is definitely the best way to experience these titles now.
MARVEL vs CAPCOM Collection Review: Gonna Take You For Another Ride
I miss the old days. Back when things were easier and also when you could just boot up your Dreamcast to play some good old’ Marvel vs Capcom 2. Well, things may not be getting any easier, but Marvel is finally back! Capcom finally decided that the time has come for the Marvel Versus series to make a comeback. Enter the MARVEL vs CAPCOM Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics, where it’s actually all of the older Marvel Versus titles included in one big fighting game package.
I won’t sugarcoat it; it’s going to be hard to not be biased about the collection in general. It’s quite literally the games that I grew up watching and playing back then, so excuse me for having the nostalgia glasses on.
It’s hard to judge this game’s visuals and graphics because I would like to say that it looks absolutely perfect even back then. The Marvel Versus series was touted as the best representations of the Marvel universe in video game form. They made it a point that the characters look very close to their comic book appearances, as seen by the characters’ designs. Also, the game still holds up to this day in terms of comparing spritework and animations. The way these characters move is simply a thing of beauty. If there’s anything to add, it’s that the collection actually shows off never-before-seen art in the series.
For the audio design, it actually sounds pretty great. The audio is just as iconic as how I remember it being. The sound effects are still embedded in my head, and I’ll always remember them due to the fact that I’ve heard them so many times just from either playing or watching the games. Also, the fact that the game has a jukebox mode to listen to all the tracks is amazing. I’ll be listening to the Clock Tower Stage theme on repeat.
The gameplay is pretty much the same, and that’s great. They never really needed to touch anything in the game aside from actually choosing the best port of the games that had certain patches included in them. Based on research and my own experience, I’m glad to share that the collection does use the best versions or ports of the available games. It’s also noteworthy that the collection shares the same amount of input lag as the Dreamcast version, which is the one that’s used in most tournaments and emulators.
As for the additional features that the game added, I can confirm that the online lobby system and netcode are pretty great as well. The game even has an achievement system, which you can strive to complete if you’re a completionist. All of the fighting games even have training mode available for you to practice and perfect your execution. I’ll be busy trying to keep the rhythm and perfect my Iron Man infinites just so I can have a fighting chance against the veterans of the game.
If there’s a few problems to really point out, it’s the newly added quicksave system. It’s quite a shame that there’s only one slot available for all 7 titles. It would’ve been more convenient if there were more slots available, especially since one of the titles is a beat ‘em up game that you don’t really want to keep repeating.
As most of these are fighting games, it’s also not built to be played on the Nintendo Switch’s default joycons. While I was still able to pull off a few combos here and there in Marvel vs Capcom 2, this was thrown out the window in the older titles as they’re six-button fighters. It’s not impossible to use the joycons, but it’s very inconvenient and uncomfortable to use continually. I would recommend getting a Switch Pro Controller or a compatible controller of your choice, so that execution is the least of your worries.
Ultimately, the game is a great compilation of a series that’s beloved by many. However, the game is a little pricey at $49.99. The series itself is already cemented as an iconic crossover that’s known to many, so fans would no doubt be wanting to get the collection to play the game on modern systems. But, as a big fan myself, I can’t exactly recommend this to be a purchase that everyone would enjoy, mainly because of its price point and because it’s primarily fighting game content.
Don’t get me wrong; I’m not saying that those who are simply interested in the series shouldn’t buy the game. $49.99 isn’t exactly a small investment to a lot of people, and if you don’t enjoy fighting games in general, you might regret buying the collection if it just ends up being shelved because you don’t enjoy the genre. If you’re a fan of only Marvel vs Capcom 2, you might want to try playing on Fightcade first, just so you can get a feel for the game while having access to competition, as there will always be players available to challenge.
Regardless, I hope this collection does well, as it could amount to even more releases by Capcom. Hell, there might even be a chance that Marvel vs Capcom 3 gets remade or a possibility of a completely new Marvel vs Capcom game being released. Whatever the case, we can all agree that Marvel lives on, and I’m glad that I’m on the timeline where I could see it being a mainstay for everyone to enjoy without the hassle of going through emulators.

7 Games in 1 Bundle
Simply put, the collection has six different fighting games and a beat ‘em up for you to enjoy. There’s not much else to say about it, but that there’s a ton of content that you can do both single-player and multiplayer in all of these titles.
Online Lobbies and Rollback Netcode
It’s important in the current era of fighting games that it releases with a good online option these days. The game uses rollback netcode, which is also what Capcom used for their older fighting game collections as well. Additionally, the game also has to have a pretty good lobby system so that multiple players can join in and fight to their hearts content.
Can Play on the Go
With the arrival of the collection on modern platforms and consoles, the game is now officially portable. Seeing as this is a compilation of older titles, there should be no problem in playing any of the titles on any platform of your choice. You can use the Switch to be able to duke it out on the go or on the newer handheld PCs that are out.
Uses the Best Versions of the Older Titles
One of the fears that fans of the series had were the versions of the games being used for the collection. Based on the data taken by the community, the versions seem to be identical to the port that’s most commonly used in tournaments and emulators (Dreamcast). Capcom didn’t drop the ball on this one, and it’s good to know that they’re definitely taking the correct steps to not mess this collection up.

Switch Joycons Are Definitely Not Recommended
Do not use the Switch joycons when playing the collection or even fighting games in general. Clearly, the joycons are not built to be able to do quarter-circle motions and other special inputs in a short amount of time, as they’re made for simpler inputs. You might even risk breaking the directional pad with continued use. Additionally, the older titles are six-button fighters as opposed to Marvel vs Capcom 2 which only uses four buttons for attacking. I recommend a different controller when playing the collection or fighting games on the Switch.
Only One Quicksave Slot
One of the added features in the game is having a quicksave slot to be able to go back to certain points in your playthrough. However, the game only uses one quicksave slot for ALL seven titles, which is a shame to say the least. It would’ve been a little more convenient to have more quicksave slots, especially when you want to come back to a beat’em up title that might take a while to finish.
Is MARVEL vs CAPCOM Collection Worth It?
Wait for a Sale, Unless You’re a Fan of the Series!
For $49.99, you will be able to purchase one of the most historic franchises in fighting game history, with the added benefit of playing them on modern systems. However, I can’t exactly recommend dropping $50 to buy the collection, especially if they’re only fans of Marvel vs Capcom 2. If you’re really interested in the series, then go ahead!
But if you’re not really that into fighting games and just want to play the game, you could just go for an emulator on Fightcade just so you can try the game out first before putting the money down. I’d suggest waiting for a sale to make a more financially sound decision, rather than going into it just for the hype.
