Kyoto Xanadu Gameplay
Kyoto Xanadu revolves around exploring the labyrinthine Xanadu and engaging in social activities during the player’s daily life as a student. The game uses a sidescrolling format while navigating Xanadu and Kyoto, and then shifts into a fully 3D action RPG combat system when facing dangerous opponents.
Sidescrolling Exploration
While in Xanadu, players can use a variety of abilities to traverse the far reaches of the labyrinth. In these sidescrolling sections, characters can perform attacks, guard, parry, shoot projectiles, use abilities, use items, access the Sub Menu, or look at the map.
Characters can use their abilities to reshape the terrain. A few of these include freezing waterfalls and shooting certain points to create platforms or high jump points.
Players can freely swap between the protagonist Rei and other party members they meet along the way, such as the students they interact with in Hirasaka Academy.
Action RPG Combat System
Facing truly dangerous enemies will transition players into an action RPG combat setup, where they will freely move their characters in full 3D space and attack their opponents in any direction.
Much like the sidescrolling section, players have access to attacks, guarding, parrying, projectiles, items, the Sub Menu, and abilities. Certain attacks with their own special animations can also be performed to unleash devastating damage.
Daily Life and Social Sim
In Kyoto Xanadu, players can also engage in several activities to raise their stats, like Wisdom, Courage, and Virtue. As a student, they have access to a variety of class activities that will earn them experience points corresponding to these stats.
Rei can also spend time with his friends at Hirasaka Academy and grow his relationship with them.
Kyoto Xanadu Story
Kyoto Xanadu is a follow-up to the original 2015 PS Vita Tokro Xanadu and its enhanced 2017 version. However, the game seems to take place in an alternate reality and shifts its location from Tokyo to Kyoto, along with a new cast of characters.
Kyoto Xanadu Setting
In an alternate Japan where Kyoto is its capital, another world crawling with hordes of monsters begian to encroach on this reality. The school known as the Hirasaka Academy deploys expeditions into a great labyrinth known as Xanadu, which was rumored to be the origin of this other world.
Kyoto Xanadu Plot
Kyoto Xanadu follows a young boy named Rei, who awakens to his powers and ends up attending Hirasaka Academy after a certain incident. He is determined to conquer Xanadu and would eventually explore the great labyrinth along with his fellow students and friends.
Along the way, they encounter a mysterious girl in Xanadu, who, after a series of events, ends up joining their team.
