Infinity Nikki Review [Reunion Playtest]

A Magical Fashion Statement

If I had to sum up my experience with Infinity Nikki's Reunion Playtest in two words, they would be “fashionable” and “magical.” The game left me in awe with its breathtaking visuals, from Nikki herself to her stunning outfits, and the beautifully crafted world she explores. Every detail radiates charm and elegance.

For those unfamiliar with the Nikki series, it follows a stylish heroine named Nikki, with previous games primarily being mobile dress-up titles. From the 2D world of Love Nikki to the 3D fashion show in Shining Nikki, the series has always been about fashion and creativity. As a long-time fan of the series, I was thrilled to see Infinity Nikki take a bold step in a new direction. This is Infold Game’s first open-world title, a big leap from its mobile roots, and there’s a lot riding on this transition to a full-fledged game. My expectations were high—and so far, it’s living up to them.

Expands on the Nikki Lore in Magical Ways

Image
For those new to the Nikki series, you might not expect it, but this game is surprisingly deep when it comes to its lore—and this installment really pushes that forward. The adventure starts with Nikki and her trusty companion, Momo, hunting through her attic for a graduation party outfit. What they find, though, is a strange red dress hidden away in a wardrobe.

The second Nikki puts it on, she and Momo are transported to a crumbling castle where they meet Ena, The Curator. Ena, imprisoned for over 1,000 years since the Heaven Fall, talks in riddles about infinity, destiny, and how she used to dance with the original owner of Nikki’s new red dress. She sets you on a quest to find the eight Miracle Outfits that will reveal the Truth—though at the cost of something dear.

After that cryptic encounter, Nikki wakes up in an abandoned Stylist Guild Building in the town of Wishfield, where her real journey begins. She crosses paths with a girl named Dada, who helps her register with the peer-pal system before setting off to the first city, Wishfell, a place known for granting wishes.

The lore gets more intriguing as you progress, especially once you meet The Prophet and start learning more about the stunning, vibrant regions that make up this world. It’s all beautifully designed, and with every new discovery, you’re pulled further into the mystery. I can't wait to see how the rest of the story unfolds when the full game drops.

Jaw-Dropping Visuals

If the screenshots haven’t already made it clear, Infinity Nikki is absolutely breathtaking. The vibrant world of Miraland bursts with life, creating a fantasy setting that glistens with beauty. But the true highlight? Nikki herself and her stunning array of dresses. Each outfit is a visual masterpiece, especially when they move—flowing gracefully with every step. My personal favorite is the Bubbly Voyage outfit, with its shimmering blue that looks like a jellyfish as you float through the game. It's mesmerizing.

What excites me the most is how the game fully embraces the dress-up element. There’s an endless variety of dresses and accessories, letting you mix and match to your heart’s content. Whether you're buying from the store, trying your luck at the gacha hub, or unlocking new outfits through the Infinity Heart, there's always something to discover.

I love the distinction between the Heart of Infinity Outfits, which have special magical abilities, and the regular wardrobe options. And yes, you can use the magical outfits as part of your everyday wardrobe too, with the ability to switch between at least four wardrobe sets whenever you like.

The visuals are top-tier, but what really stands out is how seamlessly Nikki switches outfits when she uses her abilities—it’s like watching a magical girl transformation straight out of an anime like Sailor Moon. It all happens so fluidly, and it never fails to captivate.

Combat is Lacking but Everything Else is Fun

If there's one downside to Infinity Nikki right now, it's the overly simplistic combat. Fighting the Esselings feels far too easy, with little challenge or depth. The only combat option so far is the Purifying Outfit, which is basically the ability to shoot an infinite number of light blasts. I get that this is meant to be a cozy game, but the combat almost feels like an afterthought. I really hope they introduce more variety or depth as the game progresses because right now, there’s hardly any difference between battles. That being said, everything else about the gameplay is a lot of fun from what I’ve played so far.

If you’re a fan of Breath of the Wild or Genshin Impact, this game gives off similar vibes, especially with its exploration and UI, which feels heavily inspired by Genshin. The playtest offers quite a lot to do—aside from following the main quests, there are plenty of side activities and quests to dive into. Controlling Nikki feels smooth and elegant, especially when using her outfit abilities. She may not be able to climb like Link or Genshin characters, but her graceful floating and gliding more than makeup for it. It’s a joy to explore the beautifully detailed world, appreciating every little nook and cranny.

Collecting Whimstars is a particular highlight—gathering enough allows you to unlock special outfits, and it’s surprisingly fun to track them down using Momo’s vision. Some Whimstars even involve mini-games, reminiscent of the Korok challenges in Breath of the Wild. Whether it's finding stars hidden in plain sight, completing obstacle courses, or taking on door challenges in mysterious white realms, there’s always something engaging to do.

The side quests and mini-games add even more variety, and I have to say, one of my favorite side activities is using Nikki’s camera. The photography system is incredibly detailed, with the option to upgrade and unlock filters, poses, and more. It’s easily one of the best camera modes I’ve seen in any game, and it even saves the photos directly to your PC for easy access.

Customization is another standout feature. As a fan of character customization in games, I was thrilled by the sheer number of outfits and accessories you can mix and match. This playtest alone offered a vast selection of outfits, and I can’t wait to see what’s available in the full game. While I can’t comment much on the gacha system yet (since the store is missing certain features), I did manage to pull a few times with the in-game currency, and the results have been promising.

Overall, Infinity Nikki is shaping up to be an amazing experience. Despite a few bugs (expected in a playtest), the game’s charm and potential are undeniable. With stunning visuals, fun gameplay, and endless customization, I’m eagerly awaiting the full release!
