With enhanced graphics, improved controls, and additional abilities, the game is a completely improved version of the original release. The game features Disney’s forgotten characters like Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, Horace Horsecaller, and more, as well as a darker atmosphere than the franchise’s usual mood and vibe.

Disney Epic Mickey Rebrushed Overall - 80/100

Disney Epic Mickey Rebrushed is a direct improvement to a more-than-a-decade-old platformer that’s already been known to be a cult classic. The game not only looks amazing, it also improves on a lot of problems that was plaguing its original release back in 2010. However, even with its new bells and whistles, the game still embraces its dated gameplay design and fails to remove all of its major issues. Nevertheless, the game is a great revival to the Epic Mickey series that was trapped in an old console.

Disney Epic Mickey Rebrushed Story - 8/10

The game’s story is unchanged, and is still compelling as before. It’s an epic tale of Mickey saving the day with his magical paintbrush, and even meets some of the older and more forgotten Disney characters like Oswald in the series. It shows a different side of Mickey that normally isn’t seen in the common films and shows nowadays, and has him be the hero that the Wasteland needs.

Disney Epic Mickey Rebrushed Gameplay - 7/10

The game is primarily a platformer with a hint of third-person shooter mechanics with how Mickey uses the paintbrush. You’ll be placed in areas interlaced with simple puzzles around, and most of these are actually optional as you’ll only need to do a couple to progress through the level.

It definitely improved on a couple of aspects to make the game flow a lot better than its original counterpart, like the addition of sprint, better camera movement, and more. However, it’s definitely got some issues. the gameplay is plagued by several dated gameplay mechanics that could not be saved by a fresh coat of paint as it becomes repetitive quickly.

Disney Epic Mickey Rebrushed Visuals - 9/10

The main attraction of the game is definitely its improved visuals, as the game has definitely stepped up in terms of visuals. The best part is that its able to keep its aesthetic and theme while improving the overall look of the game.

Disney Epic Mickey Rebrushed Audio - 8/10

The soundtrack of the game definitely fits the game’s mood and atmosphere However, there is one glaring issue: the lack of voice acting. Although it’s correct that the characters aren’t supposed to be voiced, it’s a shame that the amazing dialogue is wasted by a few squeaks and moans that the characters make.

Disney Epic Mickey Rebrushed Value for Money - 8/10

For $59.99, the game is more than a faithful recreation of a cult-classic platformer. It improves on a lot of features that the game desperately needed and modernized the game to cater to broader audiences. The game also has a ton of content that players have access to, since the game has collectibles for players to collect and outfits to try on. Although, the price point is quite steep, it offers the best experience of an already critically acclaimed platformer that not a lot of people were able to experience.

Disney Epic Mickey Rebrushed Review: Repainting an Epic Platformer

Image

One of the platformers that wasn’t able to get its time in the spotlight during its time was definitely Epic Mickey. Though it released with middling scores due to a couple of gameplay issues its first iteration, the game had something special especially with the story, characters, and art direction. So, it’s definitely a welcome surprise that the game got a full-on remake as it’s one of the niche platformer games that deserves a second chance especially because of the game’s brand and identity.

The remake doubles down on the game’s already acclaimed character designs and art direction, and enhances the game’s graphics to a modern standard. It’s enough to actually make players who are not familiar with the game to have it mistaken as a completely new game. It definitely shows off the intended darker vibe that the franchise was going for, which is a definite contrast to the usual portrayal of Mickey Mouse.

Image

The story remains untouched. It’s still sort of based on Fantasia where Mickey gravely makes a mistake by trying to fix or cast something that he’s not supposed to. With that in mind, it’s sort of similar, where Mickey ruins the world that Yen Sid creates in both occasions. The big difference here is that Mickey comes into contact with the rest of the older and forgotten Disney characters. It becomes an epic tale of redemption as Mickey is on the quest to save the Wasteland from the consequences of his actions.

The audio design is definitely pretty good, especially the soundtrack since it definitely fits the game’s aesthetic and vibes. However, it definitely lacks one crucial aspect that could’ve elevated the game to a whole different level. The game lacks voice acting, which is a shame since the game has a ton of great dialogue that definitely needs to be read aloud.

Image

Lastly, the gameplay. It definitely improved upon the original release with tons of quality of life improvements across the board. First off, you can now sprint in the game which was definitely not available in the first release. This change made it so that the game’s pacing would be hastened as opposed to the previous release. Second, the game’s camera issues from the previous game have been fixed and have definitely made the game a lot more enjoyable to play.

With all these being said, the game is not without any flaws. The game actually has some flaws that carried over from its first release to the remake. One is the lack of stage select in the game which means that missed collectibles would have to be revisited when you finish the game the first time. Another is the game’s flawed morality system as it doesn’t really influence the game except for its ending which wasn’t really cahgned at all. Lastly, the gameplay design is repetitive and dated.

Image

Even with these flaws, however, the game remains to be a great game. Even saying that this game in particular is the best way to experience the Epic Mickey franchise. The game’s price point is steep at $59.99, but more than makes up for it with the amount of collectibles that you have to complete and quite lengthy story campaign. Epic Mickey is definitely a franchise that needed a reboot since it was trapped in the Wii for the longest time. Let’s just hope that this means the franchise is getting a third game and will be remaking the sequel as well.

Pros of Disney Epic Mickey Rebrushed

Amazing Graphical Enhancements

Image

The game looks absolutely stunning. It’s like a modern rendition of the classic Disney films and episodes brought to life in video game form. It’s one thing that the characters look great in terms of their 3D designs, but they’re also animated amazingly as well. Moreover, the environments, levels, and areas all look great as well. Some of them are clearly inspired by the aforementioned classic films and episodes, and they are all designed to have their own vibe. Special mention goes to the 2D levels since they definitely were my favorite parts of the game.

Great Quality of Life Improvements

Image

The biggest two issues of the original game was that Mickey moved way too slow and that the over-the-shoulder camera was a pain to deal with. Both of these are pretty much gone in the remaster, as the addition of both the Sprint function and the camera fixes make the game play well.

Enjoyable Mechanics

Image

Using the paintbrush is oddly enjoyable, as using both the paint and the thinner influences the game’s world in different ways. One instance in particular is the use of paint or thinner to add or erase certain objects to progress through areas. Finding secrets by painting over or thinning the paint on random areas is a simple joy that most, if not all, platformers definitely should have.

Cons of Disney Epic Mickey Rebrushed

Things That Disney Epic Mickey Rebrushed Can Improve
Checkmark Missable Collectibles
Checkmark Flawed Morality System
Checkmark Dated Gameplay Design

Missable Collectibles

Image

One big problem that the original game had which still persists in the remaster is the lack of a stage, episode, or chapter select to go back for missing collectibles. This means that missing a certain collectible would mean that you’ll have to finish the whole game to come back them later on.

Flawed Morality System

Image

The game’s morality system is pretty simple, as it’s really only black and white. There’s not much else to it than the different rewards that you miss for choosing certain decisions in major story points. If anything, it’s really only the ending of the game that gets affected greatly by the different decisions that you’ve made throughout the game.

Dated Gameplay Design

Image

The biggest issue of the game is its core gameplay design. After playing through the tutorial, you’ll quickly realize that it plays quite literally the same for the rest of the game but in different locales. Though repetitiveness isn’t exactly something that a lot of platformers should be able to address in all of its stages, there should be some variety to its design so that players keep their interest. The areas are kinda like Spyro’s big areas laced with different fetch quests and optional simple puzzles that you’ll be solving to collect all the different items in the game.

Is Disney Epic Mickey Rebrushed Worth It?

Currently The Best Way to Play Epic Mickey

Image

It’s no question that Disney Epic Mickey Rebrushed is the best way to experience the original game currently. The enhanced graphics and improved mechanics are enough to put the game as one of the good platformers of this year. While the genre itself has some stiff competition, Disney Epic Mickey Rebrushed is able to differentiate itself with its unique aesthetic, simple mechanics, and memorable characters. I only hope that its sequel also gets remade, and that the series can have a resurgence with a third entry.
