With the highly-anticipated Witcher 4 reportedly in development, it’s only a matter of time until fans everywhere can get their hands on the sequel. But when might that be? Read along to find out our best guess as to when it’ll be released!
Witcher 4 Release Date and Time
Releasing in 2027 or 2028
Fans of the Witcher games will have to wait just a bit longer, as chances are that the sequel to the critically acclaimed The Witcher 3 won’t see a release until at least 2026.
CD Projekt Red officially announced that the next title for the gritty medieval fantasy RPG franchise, The Witcher 4, codenamed ‘Polaris,' has commenced development. Progress picked up around October of 2023, well after the release of Cyberpunk 2077’s Phantom Liberty DLC. The DLC itself was released to the masses on September 26, 2023, and ever since then, over half of staff under CD Projekt Red has been transferred to the development of the Witcher sequel.
Though the development of Witcher 4 was also announced alongside the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel titled Project Orion, fans can rest easy knowing that different teams from different CDPR branches will be handling the two games. Meaning that resources for either project will crossover or be siphoned from either teams’ development.
Witcher fans can rest easy, as the branch handling its sequel’s development will be the main Warsaw staff in Poland that has decades of experience making games, whereas Cyberpunk will be made under three different branches in North America.
However, the Warsaw staff will still have a major adjustment period to get accustomed to, as the newest Witcher is reportedly being made using Epic Games’ proprietary Unreal Engine 5. Though UE5 has looked as revolutionary as it can be, it has yet to be proven and tested with a massive game that The Witcher 4 seems to be undertaking.
Given that the project had only just begun, and with the starting growing pains of learning UE5, the 2027 estimate might actually be too optimistic, and 2028 would be the more realistic release timeframe. Nevertheless, the Witcher community can pass the time by replaying the entire series for the nth time, or by following their very successful TV series adaptation that’ll be reaching its conclusion soon.
