Unfortunately, as of writing, there are issues regarding players not receiving the supposed email that should contain the code to access the R6 Siege X Closed Beta. Ubisoft’s official support account, Ubisoft Support, posted on Twitter (X) on March 14, acknowledging this problem and are now working towards getting those emails out as soon as possible.
It is important to note that R6 Siege X is not a new game but rather a major update that will take Siege to new heights with all the graphical and technical updates the game will receive.
New 6v6 Game Mode Dual Front
Ubisoft introduced Dual Front, a new dynamic 6v6 game mode that, according to its official website, will "deliver foundational upgrades to the core game (including visual enhancements, an audio overhaul, rappel upgrades, and more) alongside revamped player protection systems, and free access that will allow players to experience the unique tactical action of Rainbow Six Siege at no cost."
The game mode will take place on a new map called District, which will be the battleground for two teams of six Operators fighting to attack enemy sectors while defending their own. This will mark the first time for R6 to have both attacking and defending Operators at the same time, "opening up new possibilities for gadget combinations and ingenious tactics."
Meanwhile, the game will still retain its classic Siege mode that Rainbow Six Siege (Siege) is known for. In the main menu, it will now be called "Core Siege," which features five modernized map updates for Clubhouse, Chalet, Border, Bank, and Kafe, giving those maps double texture resolution, optional 4K texture on PC, and enhanced destructible materials. As of the moment, only five maps will be modernized, but future seasons will add three at a time.
Free Access Starting Season 2 of Year 10
Siege will finally be free-to-play after 10 years, following the trend of its major competitors. At the time of its release in 2015, paid multiplayer games such as Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 and Battlefield Hardline were the standard, and the concept of live-service games was not as prolific as it is today.
Siege Game Director Alexander Karpazis spoke with PC Gamer at the R6 Siege X Showcase event in Atlanta on March 13 and said that the team wanted to introduce the game to new players. He said, "We want people to invite their friends to try out Siege, and we want to give them the majority of the game so that they understand what makes this game so special." Karpazis added, "That reduces the barrier [to entry], because honestly Siege is at its best when you've got friends playing with you."
The free access includes game modes such as Unranked, Quick Play, and the new Dual Front. However, Ranked mode and the Siege Cup will require players to get the paid premium access. In an interview with PC Gamer in 2020, then-game director Leroy Athanassoff mentioned that the idea of making the game pay-to-play in the beginning was to not make life easier for smurfs and cheaters.
He thinks that keeping Ranked mode locked behind a paywall will balance the scales. "Having that barrier to Ranked or Siege Cup means you have to be committed to the game. It does mean we weed out smurfs, and it means we're prepared to continue supporting the most competitive aspect of the game," he said. Karpazis continued, "It is, in our opinion, the best of both worlds where you can bring in new players but also have this place where veterans feel super competitive and committed to the game."
Siege 2 Was Never On The Table
Karpazis revealed that the team never thought of making Siege 2 despite hitting its 10-year mark since its release. Compared to its FPS competitors, such as Overwatch 2 and Counter-Strike 2, R6 Siege opted not to create a sequel but rather do what they thought was right for their game.
Karpazis explained, "Siege 2 was never on the table. A lot of live service games are starting to go through this process because a lot of them are hitting that 10-year mark." He added, "We just had to do what was right for Siege and what was right for players as well. When we go back in time three years ago, that was the main focus for us."
Siege X has been in development for around three years alongside Siege’s consistent seasonal updates. According to Karpazis, the idea for Siege X is to continue the experience players had with Siege in the next 10 years. He said, "Siege X, for us, is a moment where we want to make big, meaningful changes to the game. We want to show that, yes, we're here for another 10 years, and we want to respect the people who brought us here so far."
Karpazis noted the importance of the community to the game and stated, "You don't get to 10 years as a live service game without the community that built you up."
Rainbow Six Siege X is set to be released on June 10, 2025 on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. To stay up to date with the latest information about the game, check out our Rainbow Six Siege article below!
