Netflix Announces The Witcher Season 5 is the Final Season

The Witcher Season 4 Production Underway with Liam Hemsworth as Geralt

Season 4 of The Witcher has begun filming in the UK, as recently confirmed by Netflix, with Hollywood star Liam Hemsworth stepping into the shoes of Geralt following actor Henry Cavill's departure from the series. Hemsworth will continue to portray the monster hunter in Season 5, which will be shot alongside Season 4.

However, Netflix revealed that Season 5 will be the final installment of the show. "It is with huge pride that we begin shooting our penultimate season of The Witcher with a stellar cast, including some exciting new additions, led by Liam Hemsworth as Geralt of Rivia," creator and showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich said in a statement on the Netflix Tudum site today.

Schmidt added, "We’re thrilled to be able to bring Andrzej Sapkowski’s books to an epic and satisfying conclusion. It wouldn’t be our show if we didn’t push our family of characters to their absolute limit — stay tuned to see how the story ends."

Hemsworth's casting comes after Cavill's departure was announced in October 2022. Reflecting on his time as Geralt, Cavill expressed gratitude for the opportunity and passed the torch to Hemsworth with enthusiasm. "As with the greatest of literary characters, I pass the torch with reverence for the time spent embodying Geralt and enthusiasm to see Liam’s take on this most fascinating and nuanced of men."

After the shocking, Continent-altering events that closed out Season 3, the new season follows Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri, who are separated and traversing the war-ravaged Continent and its many demons. The announcement further teased, "If they can embrace and lead the groups of misfits they find themselves in, they have a chance of surviving the baptism of fire — and finding one another again."
