With the conclusion of the Norse duology in God of War Ragnarok, that begs the question: will there be another God of War game? Continue and read our theories and guesses for the future of God of War!
Will The Current God of War Get a Sequel?
A Continuation of the Nordic God of War Saga Seems Unlikely Right Now
It’s rather sad to hear, but as of writing, the God of War reboot duology featuring Norse mythology, God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarok (2022) seems to have fully tied up loose ends and ended the running story. Fans still had hope for another continuation as some sort of "Spider-Man Miles Morales" situation, where there could be a short expansion that will feature Atreus as the playable protagonist. However, hopes were dashed at the announcement and release of the free DLC, God of War: Ragnarok: Valhalla, which had fully concluded the stories of Kratos and his son as the Dad of War reflected upon his past and moved forward.
However, not all hope is lost. Notice how I specifically mentioned that the NORSE duology was finished? Well, there are still plenty of other gods from other mythologies to kill, and a couple of potential ones are…
Egyptian or Mayan God of War?
According to Sony Santa Monica Creative Head and God of War Director Cory Balrog, the original God of War (2018) was originally set in Egypt at the start of production. However, as the staff were very divisive and fought for a different setting, the Nordic supporters won and what we have now was made. However, Balrog has stated numerous times over the years that, after the Norse narratives have wrapped up, they could potentially head down the initial Egyptian plan. Another mythology that Balrog has mentioned were the Mayans, which would be a wholly different continent and world from the gods Kratos has faced in Europe.
Clearly, there are almost limitless mythologies that could still be explored and for Kratos to meet (and maybe kill), and we can only wait to see where Santa Monica will take the God of War next.
Will The Original God of War Games Get Remakes or Remasters?
More Possible Than You Think
We’ve been so enthralled at the prospect of a sequel that perhaps we should stop looking forward, and maybe look backward instead. New God of War games may be coming out, and they might just be remakes of the old original trilogies that featured Greek mythology.
Late last year, rumors started circulating about the original trilogy being remade for the PS5. However, Sony Santa Monica nor any other official source has confirmed the rumors. Many fans have started looking for signs that it could be true, and have derived that the new Greek-inspired enemies residing in God of War Ragnarok: Valhalla could be assets being made for the supposed remake. The Valhalla DLC also featured young Kratos himself as old current Kratos reflected upon his past. Lastly, the most telling evidence would be from the current voice actor of Kratos himself, Christopher Judge. Judge has stated that he was recently asked to voice the younger version of Kratos, but refused out of respect for the original performer. The most likely explanation behind the request was for him to speak a few lines in the aforementioned Valhalla DLC as old Kratos spoke to his younger self. However, another possibility was if Judge was asked to continue being Kratos’ voice for the rumored remakes.
There are certainly some leads that could spark hope for remakes, but these are all but rumors and unconfirmed theories. The best fans can do right now is wait and see what the future, or past, holds for the beloved God of War franchise.
