Resident Evil 9 Release Date and Time

Coming Out 2025 or 2026

Image

Resident Evil 9 (RE9) could very well be announced this year and be released by 2025 at the earliest and 2026 at the latest. A quick cursory glance at the release timings between RE7 and RE8 would show a 4-year gap between the two’s 2017 and 2021 release years. So the easiest assumption to make would be that RE9 will come out 4 years after RE8, giving us a comforting 2025 release date.

Another pattern that helps the 2025 guesstimate includes the impending RE5 Remake. So far, Capcom has been graciously pacing the releases of their RE titles across multiple years. RE7 hit the shelves in 2017, and was followed by two remakes in RE2 and RE3 in 2019 and 2020 respectively. Afterwards, the next main numbered title, RE8 Village, was released in 2021, and was followed two years later by the highly-anticipated RE4 Remake in 2023. If this other pattern continues, then RE5 might come out in 2024, allowing for RE9 to become available in 2025!

Though patterns are nice and all, we should also be grounded with our optimism and recognize that RE5 most likely will not come out anytime soon, since Capcom has learned from the RE3 debacle that releasing another remake so soon after the last one, with such drastic changes that resulted in such a short playtime would not be ideal. They will most definitely take much more care for RE5, and in turn release that much later.

Given all of that, it’s a coin flip toss-up between RE9 releasing and RE5 Remake coming out first, really, as both projects are expected and highly anticipated after the events of their previous games. Either way, Resident Evil fans will be ‘eating good.’

Resident Evil 9 Theories

What Will it be About, and Who Will be the Protagonist?

OBVIOUS SPOILERS FOR RESIDENT EVIL 7 AND 8

Resident Evil 7 and 8 were the main series’ revival through the uncharted first-person territory, where it starred Ethan Winters who was on a mission to rescue his wife and child in RE7 and RE8 respectively. However, at the tail-end of RE8, we saw Ethan sacrifice himself to destroy Mother Miranda and The Mold to let his family, Mia and baby Rose, be escorted to safety by Chris Redfield.

The special RE8 DLC ‘Shadow of Rose’ starred baby Rose herself, all grown up wearing her father’s jacket as she fights the nightmares of her past and connects with her father one last time through the Mold. RE8 as a whole seems to have nicely wrapped up the saga of the Winters family, but not for Rose. As she’s a special human with powers due to her birth’s circumstances, she has been placed in the watchful care and eye of special agent Chris Redfield. She mentions having trained under him, threatening a security guard to harm them in ways her mentor "doesn’t even know I can do!"

This opens up the possibility of Rose becoming a mainstay protagonist for the future of Resident Evil.

Speaking of Chris Redfield, he himself has been absent from the main protagonist mantle for a while. With the looming RE5 remake, and his surprise playable section in RE8 as he and Wolf Squad take over the Village, there are chances Capcom has been dipping their toes for a fully playable Chris in the near future. Seeing as he is directly connected to the previous Winters saga, it’s almost guaranteed that he’ll still play a viable role as either mentor, or another playable character.
