Silent Hill f Brings Signature Horror to Japan

Image

Silent Hill f will be the first game in the series set in Japan, departing from its typical titular town. Read to learn more about the concepts and themes featured in Silent Hill f and the challenges the developers faced while creating the game.

Silent Hill Transmission Sheds Light on Silent Hill f

New Official Reveal Trailer

The recent Silent Hill Transmission, broadcast on March 13, 2025, gave fans new information about Silent Hill f alongside a new trailer. Instead of its typical setting in a fictional town in the United States, Silent Hill f is set in 1960s Japan.

The game story reads, "Shimizu Hinako was living her life as an ordinary teenager. That is, until her town is suddenly shrouded in fog and begins to change in a horrific way. Now she must explore a town she no longer recognises while solving puzzles, fighting strange enemies and doing everything she can to survive, in order to face the ultimate decision that she must make. This is a tale about a beautiful yet terrifying choice."

Silent Hill f is set in a fictional Japanese town called Ebisugaoka, inspired by a real-life town in Kanayama, Gero, Gifu Prefecture in Japan. During the presentation, the developers revealed that they have recreated the town to its last detail, highlighting its labyrinthine alleyways. They used reference pictures and recorded sounds of day-to-day life in the area, as well as combining old reference materials of the town to fit their 1960s setting.

Find the Beauty in Terror

According to Silent Hill series producer Motoi Okamoto, the main concept for Silent Hill f is to "find the beauty in terror." He explained that despite Silent Hill f retaining the series’ core elements of psychological horror, which was mostly depicted in its Western setting, the team wanted to challenge themselves in exploring the setting of Japan and leaning towards those themes.

Okamoto elaborated, "A noticeable feature of Japanese horror is the idea that terror can be found within beauty. When something becomes too immensely beautiful and perfect, it instead becomes deeply unsettling. And so, players will experience this world through the eyes of a young girl who is faced with a beautiful yet terrifying decision."

Silent Hill f Is A Completely Independent Story

Okamoto said that Silent Hill f is a completely independent story that players who haven’t played other games in the series can enjoy. Meanwhile, long-time fans would still be familiar with the game as there would be little easter eggs they can find along the way. He also mentioned that fans of Silent Hill f’s writer Ryukishi07, best known for his psychological Japanese horror visual novels, would find the game to their liking.

Being a long-time fan of the franchise, Ryukishi07 has played all the games in the series. He said that the game will be both a return to Silent Hill’s origins as well as a new series of challenges. Ryukishi07 noted that one of the challenges they faced was whether they could make a Silent Hill game despite departing from the titular town.

He stated, "Naturally, from a creator’s standpoint, I feel I can confidently say that what we’ve made is a Silent Hill game. However, we’re interested in seeing how long-time fans of the series feel after playing, and if they agree."

Silent Hill f is now available for wishlist on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. There are no official announcements regarding a specific release date. To stay up to date with the latest information about Silent Hill f, click on our article below!
