CD Projekt Considers Licensing Major IPs to Mobile Devs and Including Microtransactions in Multiplayer Titles

No Microtransactions for Single-Player Games, But Multiplayer Titles Might Have Them

In a recent interview with Polish investor site Stockwatch, CD Projekt CFO Piotr Nielubowicz stated that they "don't see a place for microtransactions for single player games," although he mentioned that there is a possibility for them to be included in future multiplayer projects. He explained that CD Projekt doesn't intend to rule out using such a business model in the case of multiplayer games.

While discussing CD Projekt's upcoming projects, Nielubowicz confirmed that Project Sirius, a spin-off of The Witcher series, will feature multiplayer and cooperative elements. Likewise, CD Projekt Co-CEO Michal Nowakowski previously said that the company was considering including multiplayer elements in the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel, Project Orion.

"We are working on specific features enhancing our single player [games], but we are not working on releasing the next [Cyberpunk] game [as] a big online experience," explained CSO Adam Kicinski during a conference call held in 2021.

However, this is not to say that these games are confirmed to use microtransactions.

The issue of in-game payments and microtransactions have recently been hotly debated among the gaming community, particularly after criticism of Capcom's Dragon’s Dogma 2's inclusion of purchasable items using real money. Capcom responded to the backlash by issuing an apology and acknowledging the concerns raised by the community.

The Witcher and Cyberpunk Considered for Mobile Game Licensing

Image

Currently, CD Projekt is primarily focused on developing The Witcher 4, with approximately 400 developers on board the project. Additionally, the company is in the early stages of creating a sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 and is collaborating with an external studio on a remake of the original The Witcher 1 game.

During CD Projekt's FY2023 earnings conference Q&A, the company revealed that it is considering licensing either of its major IPs, Cyberpunk and The Witcher, to be developed as mobile games. Co-CEO Michal Nowakowski stated that while they are considering such opportunities, there are no concrete plans to announce at present. Nowakowski further explained that any potential partnerships would be evaluated carefully, and the company would share information when the time comes.

"As for a one-off or other business model related to any such potential partnership, we would not comment on the specifics here, to be honest, plus there is nothing in place that we’re talking about," Nowakowski said. "There’s no predesigned business model we’re looking at in this case, whether one-off or shared profits. That’s another story. But when the time comes we’ll definitely share information."
