The latest entry in the long-running Musou franchise, Dynasty Warriors: Origins, made a thunderous debut at Koei Tecmo’s dedicated presentation at TGS 2024. Showcasing its iconic blend of massive battles, tactical depth, and historical storytelling, Dynasty Warriors Origins sets the stage for one of the most well-known eras in Chinese History, the Three Kingdoms Period.

Set during the Yellow Turban Rebellion, just at the cusp of the warring period that made the era iconic, the game’s narrative leads directly into pivotal battles like the Battle of Chibi, shaping its story into a grand military campaign filled with countless skirmishes.

Horde-based Combat and Elite Units

Speaking of skirmishes, Koei Tecmo presented an extended gameplay segment, featuring much of the game’s core features. True to Musou’s legacy, Dynasty Warriors: Origins pits the player against colossal waves of enemies in horde-style battles. Expect to clash with armies of up to a thousand enemy soldiers, while elite enemies and officers offer a bigger challenge to your advance.

In that vein, Officer units serve as elite fighters and linchpins for massive companies of soldiers. Defeating them in open combat or through the game’s new duel mechanic can collapse entire squadrons to crumble, making them high-priority targets.

True Musou Attacks and The Eyes of the Sacred Bird

The hallmark "True Musou" attacks also make a return, now providing the protagonist with new, cinematic finishers, granting them temporary invincibility and the ability to devastate entire swathes of the enemy force.

In a move of major strategic innovation, Dynasty Warriors: Origins lets the player utilize a mechanic called "The Eyes of the Sacred Bird," a real-time battle-scanning system that gives the player full-view of the entire battle across various fronts. With it, players can also deploy various stratagems like "Volley" or "Cavalry Charge" to damage enemy units from afar or advance their frontlines.

Morale, Pre-Battle Strategy, and Overworld Exploration

Layered on top of these are morale-based mechanics, where both friendly and enemy forces fight more effectively when their spirits are high. Taking damage, killing enemy officers, or capturing bases can swing morale in either army’s favor.

Combat isn’t just about brute force, however—strategy is key. Base capturing remains a critical mechanic, and pre-battle preparations take place at a roundtable, where players gather allies and craft their battle plans before plunging into the fray.

Dynasty Warriors: Origins also boasts an expansive overworld with fast travel and mission-based skirmishes that keep players engaged between larger battles. The overworld map adopts a diorama-style presentation, filled with merchants and interactable NPCs offering gear and quests. Weapons can be purchased in dedicated shops, and fast travel between key points makes navigation seamless.

Dynasty Warriors: Origins Protagonist Revealed

Koei Tecmo also gave fans their first glimpse of Dynasty Warriors: Origins’ enigmatic protagonist—Ziluan, an amnesia-stricken warrior and wielder of Wuxia martial arts techniques. Despite his mysterious past, Ziluan proves to be a natural leader, able to rally armies and inspire his companions.

As Ziluan pieces together his forgotten history, players will be able to shape his journey through choices that affect not only his story but the fate of entire nations. Considering Dynasty Warriors: Origins’ diverging, choice-driven narrative that leads to various possible endings, having a blank slate of a protagonist like Ziluan with high customizability in terms of arsenal and even name, this game is shaping up to be quite the personalize Three Kingdoms experience.

Dynasty Warriors: Origins Set for January 17, 2025 Release

Dynasty Warriors: Origins will be released for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC via Steam on January 17, 2025. The game can now also be added to your wishlist across all of its platforms.
