CD Projekt Red has confirmed more details on The Witcher 4, which the studio considered their most advanced
project to date, amid development on a stacked upcoming lineup including Cyberpunk 2 and The Witcher Remake.
CD Projekt Possibly Releasing The Witcher 4 Before Cyberpunk 2
The Witcher 4's Development Progress is Ahead of Other Major CDPR Titles
The Witcher 4, otherwise known as Project Polaris, could be hitting storefronts well before Cyberpunk 2 to kickstart a new journey in The Witcher RPG series. This insight came from CD Projekt's Pawel Sasko, associate game director for the upcoming Cyberpunk 2077 sequel, who shared these details during a recent appearance on the Flow Games podcast last week.
Sasko noted that The Witcher 4 is the furthest along in development among the studio’s major projects. While he refrained from divulging specific details about the game, he reaffirmed earlier statements from a CD Projekt investor call earlier in May, which indicated that The Witcher 4 would enter full production later this year. The Polish studio is simultaneously working on a sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 and a remake of the first Witcher game.
Outlining the current status of these game, Sasko clarified that The Witcher 4 being the "most advanced" refers to its development progress rather than technological prowess. He highlighted that The Witcher 4 has the largest portion of CD Projekt's workforce dedicated to it, with over 400 developers involved as of May.
Sasko also suggested that The Witcher 4 is likely to be released before Cyberpunk 2 and The Witcher Remake. Although CD Projekt is still discussing The Witcher 4 primarily as an internal concept, he confirmed that the game has progressed the most among their projects, ahead of Cyberpunk 2 and The Witcher Remake.
Despite the progress on The Witcher 4, CD Projekt is cautious about setting expectations. Director Sebastian Kalemba previously mentioned that the game would serve as "an excellent entry point for many players" while still catering to longtime fans. Kalemba also hinted at The Witcher 4 innovating "something new" in the RPG genre. Furthermore, CD Projekt CSO Adam Kicinski noted in October 2022 that the game would require a lengthy development period, estimating a minimum of three years before release. The company did not give a launch date for the game, but according to analysts earlier in the year, The Witcher 4 could potentially lock in a 2026 or 2027 debut.
