The Outer Worlds 2 is Xbox’s first $80 game, but it will only have physical releases for PS5. Read on to learn more about Xbox’s new pricing and its plans for going all-digital for future titles.
The Outer Worlds 2 Pricing and Physical Edition
Xbox’s First $80 Game Release
The Outer Worlds 2 is Xbox’s first $80 game release, as multiple store listings online indicate that its Standard edition is priced at $79.99. Meanwhile, its Premium edition will be at $99.99, which includes exclusive in-game items, future story expansions, and a 5-day early access.
This new price point is part of Microsoft’s plan to increase the prices of their products, as announced on their website on May 1. According to the post, Xbox has adjusted its recommended retail pricing for its consoles and controllers. Furthermore, its first-party games will be priced at $79.99 starting this holiday season.
"We understand that these changes are challenging, and they were made with careful consideration given market conditions and the rising cost of development. Looking ahead, we continue to focus on offering more ways to play more games across any screen and ensuring value for Xbox players," Xbox stated.
Despite the heads up, fans are still upset with the continuous price hikes happening in the video game industry. Last week, Nintendo released Switch 2 with Mario Kart World as its launch title, making it Nintendo’s first $80 game. In April, PlayStation announced a PS5 price increase in Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. A lot of video game giants are currently in this price hike trend, and unfortunately, fans will be the ones taking the brunt of these changes.
The Outer Worlds 2 Direct at the Xbox Games Showcase on June 8 showed a lot of promise for developer Obsidian Entertainment’s sequel to its award-winning sci-fi first-person shooter. However, the new Xbox policy for pricing may affect how this title will fare with the masses as it launches.
Physical Edition Exclusively for PS5
Xbox seems to go all-in digitally, as The Outer Worlds 2 will not have physical discs when it releases. Gears of War: Reloaded and Ninja Gaiden 4 are also on the same boat, although these games’ digital pre-orders are already available online.
Shockingly, these Xbox first-party titles will have physical releases for the PlayStation 5. There are no official announcements from Xbox regarding the company ditching physical discs completely for their future releases. This was a big topic within the gaming community last month as DOOM: The Dark Ages launched with only 85 MB on its game disc, leaving fans furious.
Regardless, time will tell whether Xbox’s trend to focus on digital releases will go well with the gaming community. Regardless, fans are excited to see The Outer Worlds 2 continue the series’ satirical corporate-dystopian humor while drawing inspiration from one of the most beloved RPGs also made by Obsidian, Fallout: New Vegas..
The Outer Worlds 2 is set to release on October 29 on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC. To stay up to date with the latest information about the game, check out our article below!
