Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls has released a new gameplay trailer showing improvements to the game’s combat mechanics, following feedback from the closed beta tests.
Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls Fixes Assists, Super Skills, and Combos
Marvel Tokon’s Assists are Faster and Snappier
Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls is making drastic improvements to the game’s combat system, most notably with how Assists are implemented in combat. In a brief trailer uploaded by ARC System Works, new gameplay features were shown as part of Marvel Tokon’s latest build, which will be featured at the ARC World Tour Finals in Seoul, South Korea.
The most highlighted change in the trailer surrounds the use of Assist moves, which are now faster and can be triggered consecutively. This means that assists can be used much more freely during combos, which fans claim will lead to more smooth and expressive gameplay. Furthermore, grounded assists can now be called while in an airborne state, leading to greater combo diversity and more varied offense in Marvel Tokon’s neutral game.

Character-specific Assist moves, such as Iron Man’s Unibeam assist, can also now be triggered right after cancelling an attack, which opens up more mix-up and pressure opportunities for players on the offense. A dedicated Assist button has also been added, which helps Assist moves and tagging feel more accessible.
Marvel Tokon is Looking Super Now

Alongside the changes to the Assist system, Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls is implementing fixes that affect gameplay as a whole, from adjusting how normal attacks work to how Super Skills function in combos. A major change surrounds how auto-combos won’t be performed when a Light attack misses, which means that characters won’t perform their auto-combos and risk being punished when executing attacks from a certain range. Aerial combos are now also much longer and deal more damage.
Super Skills and Wall Breaks, two previously revealed staple mechanics in Marvel Tokon, have been changed to make post-combo situations more advantageous for the attacker. Super Skills no longer trigger Wall Breaks when used at the end of a combo, which leaves characters knocked down right next to the opponents for continued pressure and leads to more combo variety. Wall Breaks, meanwhile, leave players in a "hard knockdown" situation, enabling potent mix-ups from the attacker and making the mechanic much more dangerous.
Marvel Tokon Gets an Assist from the Fighting Game Community

The newly implemented system mechanic changes have been welcomed by the fighting game community, who have criticized the game’s Assist system in the past. The FGC has been split on Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls following the game’s two closed beta tests, particularly because combos were seen as homogenized and restrictive under the old Assist system.
Before these changes, performing varied and situational Assists during combat was difficult and restrictive, as, unlike in other tag fighters like Dragon Ball Fighter Z or Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, there were only certain times where players could call in assists or tag into new characters. Calling in assist moves during combos would also just result in characters performing a "Rush assist," a generic advancing tackle move used as combo filler.

This also affected how aerial combos worked, as calling an assist in the air would cause a character to perform an aerial assist instead of a grounded one. The community has seen these mechanics as arbitrary and frustrating restrictions on combo expression and overall gameplay flow, a sentiment echoed by prominent FGC influencers such as Sajam and JMCrofts.
Thankfully, ARC System Works has been receptive to both positive and negative feedback for Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls. According to a post made on the game’s X (formerly Twitter) account, the development team has taken the feedback from the community into account for the game’s general gameplay direction and has now reflected it in the game’s latest build.
