Bethesda and Arkane Studios Austin have released the final update for open-world cooperative FPS Redfall, ironically finally adding an offline mode, along with other significant updates.
Redfall Adds Offline Mode with Final Update Following Shuttering of Arkane Austin
Redfall Final Update Overview
Redall's final update came following Microsoft's announcement to close Arkane Austin, the studio behind Redfall and beloved titles such as Dishonored and Prey. Despite speculations that the update might not see the light of day, Redfall's final update, aka Update 4, rolled out today.
Redfall now includes offline mode, one of the most anticipated features by fans, and single-player pausing. Players can now continue their solo sessions even if they get disconnected from the internet. In cooperative play, if the host disconnects, they will be dropped into a solo offline session. Moreover, players can now pause the game in single-player mode.
The update also introduced a new reputation bar called "Community Standing," which players can fill by unlocking new Safehouses, completing Safehouse missions, rescuing civilians, or killing Underbosses. There are six ranks of Community Standing, offering 39 unique rewards that provide permanent buffs. As players progress through their Skill Tree, these unlocks become increasingly impactful.
Moreover, Update 4 brought in the Elder Nests, boss-focused areas where players must defeat modified vampires to free Redfall from their influence. Elder Nests can be identified by a purple glow and offer rewards upon completion. After successfully clearing the Elder Nest, players will be granted a temporary buff called a Heart Shard.
The duration of the Heart Shard scales to the campaign difficulty; granting a longer buff at each higher difficulty.
Here are a few of the Heart Shards that could be obtained after completing an Elder Nest:
⚫︎ Ammo Synthesis: Holstered weapons regenerate ammo and reload when not in use.
⚫︎ UV Healing: A player gains health when hit by UV.
⚫︎ Light in Darkness: The expanding aura around the Nest weakens vampires inside it, instead of the usual strengthening effect.
The final update also packed in new enemy encounters in Redfall Commons, continued AI improvements, Story Mode difficulty, and a new Unrivaled Weapon.
Arkane Austin Signs Off
With the release of this final update, the developers at Arkane Austin bid farewell to the Redfall community. "We’re thankful for the millions of players who have joined us. From everyone at Arkane Austin, thank you for playing our games and loving our worlds. It’s been an honor to deliver these experiences to you," the team wrote in their announcement.
Creative Director Harvey Smith previously shared heartfelt messages on Twitter (X), reflecting on the studio's journey and everything else carried by the team. "I hugged my dear, dear friend and producer extraordinaire Ben Horne yesterday. Unintended, because we had already chatted by phone and covered some stuff about the day," he shared previously. "But I just grabbed him and held him tight. I could literally feel how much tension his body is carrying." Following the launch of the update, Smith posted a picture of Arkane Austin's design values created during the development of their previous titles, Dishonored and Prey.
