Pokémon Legends: Z-A Brings Mega Malamar to the Roster
A Supervillain-Inspired Mega Evolution
Pokémon Legends: Z-A revealed its fourth new Mega Evolution: Mega Malamar, sporting what looks like a menacing "supervillain" look according to fans. Debuting in a news broadcast-style short on the Pokémon Company’s official social media accounts, the newest Mega Pokémon came with a surprisingly evil twist.
Mega Evolutions were described as a type of temporary transformation that changes a select few Pokémon into stronger forms. This new form gave Malamar an enlarged brain, longer scythe-shaped tendrils, and an enhanced psychic power, which now vividly courses through its body in a kaleidoscope of colors.
With its huge head, slender body, and long tendrils, fans noted that this new form looks like a large human brain with an attached central nervous system. Some commented that the addition of its shoulder pad-shaped tentacles makes it look like a classic big-headed supervillain.
Even the official Pokémon X (formerly Twitter) account alluded to this motif by using a screenshot of Mega Malamar posed with a "NEW MEGA?" caption styled like the famous meme featuring Megamind, a popular big-headed supervillain.
Comes With Evil Hypnotic Powers and a Haughty Personality
It has the looks, the memes, and the Pokémon Company’s marketing department under its control, but Mega Malamar seems to be more than just a classy reference to the supervillain trope.
Its already potent hypnotic powers have been amplified by Mega Evolution, making it capable of freely overwriting entire personalities and memories of others–a power it used in the short it debuted in to turn several citizens in Legends Z-A’s Lumiose City, including its owner, into Malamar-obsessed acolytes.

The official website revealed that Mega Malamar views other Pokémon and people as its own "pawns". With an increased intellect and the ability to analyze battles on its own, it was stated to sometimes hypnotize its own Pokémon Trainer (people who catch and train Pokémon) if it disagrees with them.
Outside of its Dark/Psychic typing, the Pokémon Company gave little information on how Mega Malamar’s personality-implanting hypnotic abilities and malevolent nature would translate into its in-game appearance.
Pokémon Legends Z-A releases on October 16, 2025, for the Nintendo Switch and the Nintendo Switch 2. To stay up to date on any future Mega Evolution-related reveals, check out our article below!
