Phantom Blade Zero Not A Soulslike, Features Four Difficulty Options

Image

According to recent reports, Phantom Blade Zero will have four difficulty options namely: easy, ordinary, difficult, and extremely difficult. The game has been compared to Soulslikes by fans after its reveal in PlayStation Showcase 2023 due to its aesthetic and combat. Adding difficulty options pushes Phantom Blade Zero away from these comparisons since Soulslike games are notoriously keen on being extremely difficult and not having other difficulty options.

Phantom Blade Zero Game Director Soulframe already addressed this in an official tweet made after the game was featured in Summer Game Fest 2024. He wanted to stress that "making another soulslike" was never part of the plan. We want combo-driven, heart-pumping combat that is hectic, rewarding, and exhilarating."

The game drew comparisons to soulslike games with its dark-themed world and unique boss fights. Soulframe confirmed that the game took inspiration from soulslike games with its multi-layered maps, multiple approach paths, and hidden nooks and crevices, although according to him, "the similarities stop there." He previously described the game as "Ninja Gaiden Combat on a Souls Game Map", combining hack-and-slash gameplay with extended area exploration.

Gameplay Features With Over 30+ Weapons, 20-30 Hours of Playthrough, And More

Several other details about Phantom Blade Zero came out from the recent interviews. Players will have the option to choose from 30 primary weapons and 20 secondary weapons, each having its unique gameplay and effects in battle. The game reportedly will have around 20-30 hours of main story playthrough and an additional 20-30 hours worth of side content.

Boss fights will consist of at least two phases. If the player dies during the second phase of the boss fight, they can directly start the challenge from the second phase without having to fight the first phase again. A new game mode called "Li Wulin" is mentioned, where players can fight previously defeated bosses, which leads them to unlock new hidden bosses to conquer.

There is also apparently a mechanic that affects the ending of the game, although it remains unclear as to how it will affect the overall playthrough and how many alternate endings the game can have.

Phantom Blade Zero Year Of The Snake Gameplay Trailer

Phantom Blade Zero uploaded a "Year of the Snake Gameplay Trailer" that features Soul, the main protagonist of the game, fighting a boss called "Chief Disciple of The Seven Stars." After the boss fight, the trailer continued by featuring weapons that Soul can wield, which include "Weapon No.13 Soft Snake Sword", and "Weapon No.27 White Serpent and Crimson Viper."

Based on the trailer, the release date for Phantom Blade Zero will be announced in 2025. Phantom Blade Zero’s official Twitter (X) page also posted a video to commemorate the Lunar New Year. In the video, Soulframe mentioned that the team has many more exciting announcements lined up later this year, and they are preparing to reveal something fans have never seen before.
