Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater Will Be a “Test” for MGS’s Future

Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater’s producer recently revealed that the franchise’s future is still up in the air as the MGS3 remake nears its release. Read on to learn more about Konami’s view of MGS’s future.

MGS Delta Could Lead to More Metal Gear Solid

Konami Testing Both Fans and Its Developers

Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater producer Noriaki Okamura revealed in a recent interview that the upcoming remake will be a test to determine whether or not Konami will be dedicating itself to producing more Metal Gear games.

"We are wondering whether our new team should continue making MGS series [games]," Okamura told PC Gamer Magazine. "We believe that MGS Delta is a test of that… If you continue to place your trust in us and allow us to move forward, we believe that will be the ‘success’ of Delta."

Rather than signal the start of MGS’s next chapter, Delta will serve as a barometer for both fans’ interest and Konami’s capabilities post-Hideo Kojima. Even with the first volume of the Master Collection out and MGS Delta nearing its release, Konami isn’t getting ahead of itself, as the company has been vague on what Delta’s potential success might enable.

New Metal Gear “Absolutely Possible”

The future of Metal Gear Solid had long been in question, especially since series creator and video game auteur Hideo Kojima and Konami parted ways during MGS V’s production, but fans’ hope for the series’s continuation was renewed when Konami suddenly announced both the Master Collection and MGS Delta in May of 2023.

Looking back, the simultaneous announcements seem to align with Konami’s cautious approach. According to Okamura, Konami isn’t just trying to win back lapsed fans and capitalize on nostalgia, but they’re also attempting to cultivate the fanbase through gamers unfamiliar with the storied franchise.

When asked whether Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater would serve as a replacement for the original or complement it, Okamura said that it would do both, depending on the player.

"For this reason, we have prepared both the original, Master Collection version and the remake," Okamura explained. "For new users who are just getting started with the MGS series, MGS Delta may be more familiar. For long-time MGS series fans, the Master Collection version may feel superior."

Right now, fans can only hope that MGS Delta can pave the way for the franchise’s future and clear any of Konami’s trepidation. Even then, while a new mainline Metal Gear release is still "absolutely possible" according to long-time Snake voice actor David Hayter, he said that the franchise will never be able to recapture Kojima’s genius, weirdness, and personality. "So will it be the same? No. Could it be amazing? Sure," Hayter said in the same interview.

Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater is set to release on August 28, 2025 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. To learn more about the Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater remake, click the button below.
