Dragon Quest VII Reimagined New Screenshots And Details Revealed
A First Look At Story And Progression
Dragon Quest VII Reimagined is launching on Thursday, February 5, and Square Enix has shared new information and screenshots in an official press release on January 29, covering visual updates, gameplay elements, and details on editions and DLCs.
Square Enix has also outlined the game’s opening story and early progression. The story begins on Estard Island, where the protagonist is raised in a tiny fishing village before setting out alongside Kiefer, a childhood friend and the prince of Estard, to uncover the mystery of the world.
After helping the protagonist’s mother, players leave the village and head toward Estard Castle, where Kiefer reveals that he has discovered an ancient tome and a mysterious fragment of a stone tablet. Intrigued by the book’s contents, the two decide to investigate an ancient shrine located within the island’s Forbidden Place. Upon presenting the fragment to a statue described in the tome, a strange voice echoes through the ruins. Convinced that the key to unraveling the world’s mysteries lies nearby, Kiefer urges the player to explore the island further to fulfill the statue’s request.

As players progress, they gather information from townsfolk and solve environmental puzzles by pushing or pulling objects, as certain areas remain inaccessible until these challenges are completed. Combat is introduced during these encounters, with players teaming up with Kiefer and using items such as medicinal herbs to recover HP when needed.
Once the statue’s request is fulfilled and players return to the shrine, its sealed gates finally open. Maribel—another character who has been secretly following the pair—joins the party, and together they step inside. When the fragments of the stone tablet are assembled on a pedestal, a dazzling light engulfs them, opening a path to another world and marking the true beginning of the adventure.
Reimagined Visuals And Gameplay Elements

Character visuals in Dragon Quest VII Reimagined have been significantly updated with a warm, hand-crafted aesthetic compared to the original release. According to Square Enix, in-game models of companions were created by digitally scanning large physical dolls, which were then refined into their final in-game forms.
This visual direction is applied consistently across the game’s environments. Towns and locations are rendered in a diorama-style presentation that complements the updated character visuals.

A central element of Dragon Quest VII Reimagined involves assembling fragments of ancient stone tablets scattered throughout the world. Each completed stone tablet opens a path to a different world, allowing players to explore new regions and eras. As players progress through these worlds, the number of companions traveling alongside the protagonist gradually increases.
The remake also introduces additional story content, including childhood vignettes, alongside updates to combat systems. One notable change allows players to moonlight vocations during battles.
